Borderlands Movie Branded a Flop During its Opening Weekend With Just $8.8 Million at the US Box Office
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was eagerly anticipating the Borderlands movie, having grown attached to the vibrant and chaotic world of Pandora. However, after witnessing its dismal performance at the box office and the relentless criticism it has received from both critics and audiences alike, I can’t help but feel a sense of profound disappointment.
After receiving nearly unanimously negative criticisms, the Lionsgate film titled “Borderlands” has been labeled as a financial failure due to its dismal box office earnings during its initial weekend.
In its debut weekend, the film Borderlands managed a rather modest $16.5 million worldwide, with only $8.8 million coming from U.S. markets and $7.7 million from international ones. As reported by Variety, this initial performance is considered “disappointing” for the movie directed by Eli Roth. However, it’s important to note that about 60% of the film’s production budget of over $145 million has already been recovered through pre-sales to international exhibitors.
As a passionate fan, I must confess that, although boasting an impressive ensemble featuring Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, Jack Black, and Edgar Ramirez, the Borderlands movie has left both critics and audiences in dismay this year. It’s now considered one of the most heavily criticized films of 2024 and unfortunately, one of the poorest-performing movies at the box office this season.
In a tweet, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford expressed regret over the financial aspects of a movie, stating that it’s not his primary concern since the money is handled by the movie studio. However, he noted that if the studio experiences financial losses, they might decide against producing another movie (which would be unfortunate). This comment was made in response to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick urging people to give the movie a chance.
The Borderlands film is currently available worldwide, and Gearbox’s latest tease promises an announcement that will undoubtedly delight its passionate fanbase.
