Borderlands first reactions land ahead of cinema release

As a lifelong fan of video games and a connoisseur of sci-fi action comedies, I must admit that my expectations for “Borderlands” were sky high. Having grown up playing the original game, I was eager to see how Eli Roth would bring the vibrant, chaotic world of Pandora to life on the big screen.

Initial reviews for “Borderlands” have come out, and it seems that most critics are harshly criticizing the film version of the popular video game, which boasts a cast of prominent actors.

After the Los Angeles debut of Borderlands on August 6th, people expressed their initial reactions to Eli Roth’s action-comedy on various social media platforms.

The film adaptation of the popular video game shares the same title struggled to captivate critic’s attention, with many labeling it as “puzzling” and “unoriginal”. However, they did commend its stellar central performances, particularly those delivered by Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Ariana Greenblatt.

According to Darren Movie Reviews, the movie version of “Borderlands” is perplexing, as he describes it as “not terrible, but easily forgettable.”

The storytelling could have been more captivating, as there seemed to be a rich opportunity for intricate world creation, yet it fell short due to a hasty and unengaging script, coupled with mediocre computer-generated imagery. However, the production design was commendable, but the overall film appearance suffered because of subpar visual effects.

“Despite some limitations in character development and humor, performances by Cate Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt, and Jack Black are impressive. The movie, rated PG-13, seems to have put director Eli Roth in an awkward position, as he strived to create a lively and eccentric space adventure, given that the video game it’s based on carries a more mature M rating.”

According to critic Matthew Simpson, he’s had the chance to watch “Borderlands” and unfortunately, he didn’t enjoy it. He had high hopes for the movie, but was disappointed by its dull plot and some lackluster performances. Additionally, the film seems to be a strange blend of expensive and cheap production values, which makes it a significant miss.

Kurt Morrison finds the adaptation “unsurprisingly dull,” expressing his viewpoint as: “These days, films like Borderlands are almost too predictable to watch. With so much talent involved, both in front of and behind the camera, it’s hard for me to believe that this was the final outcome.”

“Blanchett and Hart are making this movie enjoyable to watch, preventing it from becoming a disaster. Designed as the starting point for a franchise, it might come as a shock if this film manages to attract an audience.”

In this movie, Cate Blanchett plays the lead character, Lilith – a renegade who journeys back to her celestial home, Pandora. There, she unites with a group of eccentrics on a mission to locate the lost daughter of the cosmos’ most influential figure, Atlas.

Additionally, joining the main characters are Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramirez, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Borderlands releases in cinemas on August 9.
