Boom TV shuts down event operations, will no longer host tournaments
Boom TV events are no more.
It has been announced that Boom TV has closed its event operations arm, laying off all staff working on hosting esports tournaments. The organiser held notable events in several esports titles, including Fortnite and Apex Legends. This included the popular Proving Grounds and Code Red tournament series.
The news was announced by several Boom TV staff members revealing they had been let go. This is understood to include all staff working on Boom TV events with all future planned events totally cancelled. However, Proving Grounds looks set to return in April under new leadership.
Boom TV events will be sorely missed in several titles
The loss of Boom TV events will be felt across several game titles. They had a significant impact on both the Apex Legends and Fortnite scene with grassroots and “tier 2” events. They also held significant events in Counter Strike 2, Deadlock, Call of Duty and others. This included partnering with major brands and influencers. Boom TV held events in collaboration with the likes of Tfue and Angry Ginge over the years.
In particular the events team focused on new and emerging esports to hold events. This meant that some of the very first tournaments in games like Deadock were hosted by Boom, an outlet that was helpful as an early doors barometer of esports interest in a new title.
Several players and tournament broadcast staff expressed their disappointment at the closure. Lots of successful esports players, casters and observers started their careers with Boom TV. This has included some of the breakout stars of the ALGS, DiA, Zephyr and SpiderTiff.
This closure comes as another blow to the overall grassroots esports scene. There are fewer and fewer open entry tournaments in esports. Boom TV were one of the only outlets left for lower level competition. Their absence will be sorely felt, especially in the Apex Legends and Fortnite communities. Apex Legends in particular has a real dearth of events, a matter only made worse by this closure.
