“Bonkers” soapy medical drama cancelled after one season – but it might not be the end

Soapy medical drama Doctor Odyssey has been cancelled after just one season.

A television series created by Ryan Murphy centers around a physician who becomes part of the medical staff on a lavish ocean liner, transforming it into a hospital drama that unfolds on the high seas.

This production features Joshua Jackson from Dawson’s Creek, Phillipa Soo known for Tick, Tick… Boom!, Don Johnson who starred in Knives Out, and Sean Teale from Skins. Notable guest stars include Chord Overstreet of Glee and music legend Shania Twain.

The program initially received high viewership on American television channel ABC, broadcast prior to Grey’s Anatomy. However, it failed to sustain the initial audience numbers throughout its duration, with a notable exception being the episode that crossed over with Murphy’s other show, 9-1-1, where Angela Bassett portrayed Athena Grant-Nash.

Additionally, The Guardian awarded the show a prestigious five-stars, describing it as an outrageously entertaining reimagining of “House”, taking place aboard a vessel, that manages to be both laughably terrible and brilliantly clever simultaneously.

According to Deadline, ABC hasn’t explicitly cancelled the show, but since they chose not to renew the contracts, it’s effectively cancelled. This allows the cast and crew to pursue other opportunities.

This implies that another broadcasting platform can seize the opportunity to renew the show’s contracts with all its creators.

According to reports, the series boasts a passionate fan base and performs well on Hulu, a platform, incidentally, owned by Disney, much like ABC. Yet, the show tends to be costly to produce and hasn’t always excelled in conventional television ratings.

Murphy ponders the prospect of moving it forward in a fresh setting, as John Oliver recently pleaded fervently for its renewal during his show, “Last Week Tonight.

Throughout its broadcast, the series sparked an exceptionally adventurous fan speculation, a notion that was also acknowledged by Joshua Jackson himself.

Doctor Odyssey is available on Disney+ in the UK, and on Hulu in the US.

The first print magazine from Digital Spy, titled “British Comedy Legends,” is now available! You can purchase this magazine at your local newsstands or online for only £3.99.
