Bobby Lashley has strong opinion of Hurt Business's booking in WWE

As a fan who has witnessed the highs and lows of WWE over the years, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness when I think about The Hurt Business. They were a group that truly shone during the darkest days of the pandemic, yet they were treated like second-rate acts once things started to return to normal.

During the COVID-19 worldwide outbreak, professional wrestling faced significant disruptions. The WWE managed to carry on their operations despite several wrestlers choosing or being required to stay away due to health concerns. However, one particular faction in the WWE, The Hurt Business, rose to prominence during this period, becoming one of the most popular acts in wrestling. Unfortunately, after the pandemic subsided, the group was relegated to a lesser role within the company. Currently, only Cedric Alexander remains with them. Recently, Bobby Lashley voiced his thoughts about how The Hurt Business was handled and shared some insights into his time there.

Lashley expressed during a virtual event with K&S Wrestlefest that it felt like an insult to be overlooked, as they had been working tirelessly behind closed doors during the pandemic while many others were idle. When things started returning to normal, those who had been absent seemed to receive recognition instead of those who had been putting in the hard work. He suggested that it was a bit like being spat upon. Lashley believed that if everyone had returned together, they could have achieved great things, but it seemed that the new powers-that-be didn’t want them around. Different people have different tastes, after all.

That’s quite the statement that comes at a time when fans, media, and critics alike are watching how WWE utilizes its roster closely. There’s open criticism of the main roster product, specifically Triple H, as single Black male talent and Asian talent are sparsely represented across the main roster product. At the same time, Shawn Michaels continues to elevate women and people of color on WWE NXT each week with just two hours of television.

The WWE had a unique charm in The Hurt Business. Comprising seasoned performers, they embodied both the image and skills of top-tier sports entertainers and wrestlers. Given their talent, it seemed they should have been positioned as major threats for future main events. However, they were utilized for some time before being matched against Bill Goldberg. Lashley failed to surpass the 50/50 booking he encountered versus Brock Lesnar, then vanished from the screen before departing the company during the summer of 2024.

In All Elite Wrestling, Shelton Benjamin and MVP have made their debut, and it’s rumored that Lashley will join them soon. Fans are eagerly anticipating how Tony Khan will utilize this trio, given the crowded main event scene. Matching them against Swerve Strickland is a smart initial move, as it raises the profiles of all involved while crafting a narrative centered on Black talent. This strategic decision underscores the wrestling promotion’s commitment to representation and offers opportunities for performers to shine at the highest level.

The Hurt Business represents a tale of unrealized potential within WWE. They shone brightly when they were at their peak, but those running the show had different ideas for them. Bobby Lashley’s poignant statements underscore his feelings about the situation. Here’s to wishing they experience better fortune in AEW.
