Bobby Brown Blasts Britney Spears’ Cover of ‘My Prerogative’
I, as a devoted fan of Bobby Brown, can’t help but express my opinion about Britney Spears‘ 2004 cover of his timeless hit “My Prerogative” from 1988. From my perspective, I believe that the collaboration between Britney and Swedish production team Bloodshy & Avant didn’t quite capture the essence or ‘justice’ that the original version embodied for me.
56-year-old Grammy winner Britney Spears shared with Club Shay Shay host Shannon Sharpe on Wednesday that she felt her rendition of ‘Prerogative’ was not up to par.
It seemed like Bobby mistakenly believed that Teddy Riley, his initial collaborator on songs, agreed to produce the Grammy winner’s cover version. However, Bobby felt strongly that the resulting production was a disastrous misstep he couldn’t tolerate.
Brown expressed disappointment when he realized he had agreed to the task, saying, “I managed it, but I was considering… since Teddy Riley is also involved, right? Yet, I found it to be quite a distortion of the original work.
In a similar fashion to LL Cool J, the singer from Boston has started to listen to an entire track before granting permissions for sample usage or allowing others to perform his compositions – a lesson he’s recently learned.
‘Yes, I gotta hear it,’ Bobby noted.

I strongly advise you to listen to the content they’re producing as children nowadays can sometimes use language that might not align with your musical image. Therefore, it’s crucial for you to be aware of their conversations.
12-year-old Brown established the boy band New Edition back in 1981, which later led to a successful solo career in the late ’80s and ’90s. His hit single “My Prerogative” was penned specifically as a reaction to criticism surrounding his departure from the group.
The first rendition of a track by the trailblazer of New Jack Swing reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, was purchased half a million times, garnered over 77.2 million streams on Spotify, and has accumulated more than 66 million views on YouTube.
Instead, it’s worth noting that while Britney’s cover didn’t reach number one on global charts, it did top them in Finland, Ireland, Italy, and Norway. It sold half a million copies, accumulated 53 million streams on Spotify, and its music video has been viewed over 51 million times on YouTube.
Talking about remakes, the song “Hold Me Closer,” which was influenced by Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” climbed to No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and managed to sell over a million copies in the year 2022.
The former semi-retired pop sensation, whose conservatorship concluded in 2021 after 13 years, now spends a significant amount of time at her $11.8 million home in Calabasas, often recording herself dancing in revealing outfits for the enjoyment of her 156.4 million social media fans.
Britney Spears is expected to play an active role in the creation of her officially approved biographical film produced by Universal Pictures. The project is currently being developed under the guidance of Jon M. Chu, who is known for directing “Wicked.
On August 1st, Universal shelled out a significant sum in the lower range of tens of millions (eight figures) to acquire the rights for Britney Spears’ upcoming NY Times-bestselling memoir titled ‘The Woman In Me’, set for release in 2023, as well as her music catalog for use in a film produced by Marc Platt.
Initially, publishing house Simon & Schuster gave a 25% profit-sharing advance worth $12.5 million to the ex-Mouseketeer for authoring the highly praised memoir, which reportedly had three collaborators – Ada Calhoun, Sam Lansky, and Luke Dempsey.
