Boba Fett won't be in The Mandalorian movie because no one liked his show

As a lifelong fan of Star Wars, I must say that my feelings about the recent treatment of Boba Fett are as mixed as a Wookiee’s emotions. The character has been an icon since his debut, and to see him transition from a mysterious bounty hunter to a community leader was initially intriguing. However, the execution left much to be desired, especially when it felt like we were watching season 2.5 of The Mandalorian instead of Boba Fett’s solo adventure.

For many years, Boba Fett has been a beloved character from the Star Wars universe, dating back to his debut in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). With Disney acquiring the rights to Star Wars and producing television shows, it felt fitting to create a series centered around him. Despite being devoured by the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi, we can find creative ways to work around this obstacle.

However, when “The Book of Boba Fett” debuted on Disney+ a couple of years ago, its reception was somewhat subdued. Instead of the enigmatic, gun-slinging bounty hunter fans had grown fond of, Boba Fett, portrayed by Temuera Morrison, was presented as a community leader attempting to reform Jabba the Hutt’s former criminal empire. Furthermore, a significant portion of his series seemed like an extension of “The Mandalorian,” another “Star Wars” series; Boba Fett was noticeably absent from the most impactful episodes in his own show.

As a longtime fan of Star Wars, I eagerly await the upcoming movie, “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” set to release on May 22, 2026. However, I must admit that I was disappointed to learn that Temuera Morrison, who played Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones and The Mandalorian series, will not be a part of this film. At Fan Expo Chicago, Morrison himself hinted at his uncertainty about the movie and the potential second season of “The Book of Boba Fett.”

ScreenRant expresses its personal viewpoint that “the response to this show may influence the character’s fate in the franchise.” However, it should be noted that this perspective is that of the author from ScreenRant, not a direct quote from Morrison. The only confirmed statement from Morrison is the one previously mentioned.

It’s plausible to think that the moderate response to “The Book of Boba Fett” might influence Disney’s desire to continue this character version in the future. Previously, Disney was generously offering fans a variety of Star Wars content on TV, such as “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and “The Acolyte.” (A new series, “Skeleton Crew,” debuts this December.) Last year, Disney’s CEO hinted that the studio might have overextended its big franchises, so I anticipate a scaling back. The focus may shift slightly, and Boba Fett could be among the changes made.

Although he made his initial appearance in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, it’s more accurate to say that he gained widespread popularity following the release of “Empire,” so let’s focus on that instead.
