Bo Lueders, guitarist and co-founder of hardcore metal band Harm’s Way, dies at 38

Harm’s Way, a hardcore metal band from Chicago, has announced the death of guitarist and co-founder Bo Lueders. The band shared the news on social media Thursday, saying they were “with heavy, broken hearts.” Lueders was 38 years old.

Harm’s Way shared on Instagram that Lueders will be fondly remembered for his kindness and the unique, captivating way he connected with people, both personally and during his performances. They’ve asked for understanding and privacy as they grieve his loss.

The cause of death hasn’t been released, but the band shared the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for anyone who is struggling with difficult emotions or thoughts of self-harm.

Shira Small first recorded music as a teenager in 1974. Now, decades later, her song is featured in the new A24 film “The Drama,” potentially bringing her the recognition she deserves.

Bohan Daniel Lueders, born in November 1987, started the band Harm’s Way in 2006 as a creative outlet alongside his work with the punk band Few and the Proud. Harm’s Way quickly became his main focus, releasing five full-length albums and five EPs, featuring songs like “Human Carrying Capacity,” “Become a Machine,” and “Call My Name.”

The band described their 2018 album, “Posthuman,” in a Spotify bio, and recently released their fifth album, “Common Suffering,” in 2023.

For fans of Harm’s Way, the new album ‘Posthuman’ sounds like a mix of their albums ‘Isolation’ and ‘Rust,’ but with a much more chaotic and intense sound. If you’re not familiar with the band, it’s just pure, unadulterated aggression.

As a huge fan of hardcore and punk, I’ve been really into the “HardLore” podcast since it started in 2022. It’s hosted by someone and Colin Young from Twitching Tongues, and it’s all about what it’s like to tour and live within that scene. They just dropped a new episode – the second half of a great conversation with Freddie Crician, the singer from Madball.

The rapper kicked off a two-night performance on Wednesday, playing both new tracks and classic hits on a large, dome-shaped stage set up on the stadium floor.

However, on March 19th, before they finished their planned two-part episode, Young and Lueders released a special “HardLore” segment. This episode differed from their usual format, as they spent an hour and a half answering questions from listeners. One listener asked what song they’d want to hear right before they died. Young chose “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, while his friend picked a song that wasn’t metal or punk at all.

Lueders said their song choice for a peaceful exit would likely be a track by Björk, possibly ‘Unravel’ or ‘Aurora.’ They explained they just want to drift off to sleep and pass away peacefully, demonstrating with a gentle, drifting hand motion.

“I think ‘Unravel’ is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.”

I was really moved to see that a GoFundMe was started by a friend of Nick Lueders, to help his mom, Wendy, and girlfriend, Taylor, with the expenses for his funeral and a memorial service back in Chicago. It’s incredible – by midday, they’d already raised almost $140,000! It just shows how many people were touched by him.
