BMW Officially Ceases Production of the Z4 Roadster

Summary

  • BMW has stopped making the current version of the Z4 roadster (model G29). Production ended at the Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria.

  • With the Z4 now out of production and the 8 Series Convertible also discontinued, the 4 Series is now the only convertible BMW currently offers.

  • The BMW Z4, like the Toyota GR Supra (which stopped being made this spring), experienced a jump in sales before it went off the market.

BMW has officially stopped making its Z4 sports car. The current generation, which started production in 2018, has finished its run at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria. This marks the end of a nearly 30-year legacy of Z-series roadsters, beginning with the Z3, as BMW shifts its focus towards electric vehicles and a simpler lineup.

It wasn’t a surprise when BMW stopped making the Z4. The company had hinted at it by releasing a special “Final Edition” last year, which included unique styling and, for many fans, a much-desired six-speed manual transmission on the powerful M40i model. Car enthusiasts were excited about the Z4’s last run, causing sales to jump nearly 5% in the first three months of 2026 compared to the year before. However, even with that boost, overall sales weren’t high enough to cover the expense of designing a completely new version, especially with the current popularity of SUVs.

A key part of the current BMW Z4’s story is that it was developed alongside the Toyota GR Supra. Sharing the same basic structure and engines – particularly BMW’s powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine – helped both companies bring back their popular sports cars in a cost-effective way. Now that the Supra’s production has also ended, the Z4’s future is clear: it won’t be replaced. Toyota plans to create a new, sixth-generation Supra on its own, but BMW has stated it has no plans for a successor to the Z4.

BMW’s decision to stop making the Z4 is a significant change for the company. With the 8 Series Convertible also being discontinued, the 4 Series will be the only convertible model BMW offers.

A new Z car isn’t planned for the near future, but the last Z4 models—particularly the highly praised versions with manual transmissions—are likely to become surprisingly valuable and sought-after sports cars. If you’re a driving enthusiast hoping to buy one of the last new Z4s, you’ll need to move fast before dealerships sell out of their remaining stock.
