October is often a slow month for movie theaters, as the biggest films usually come earlier or later in the year. The first weekend of November doesn’t seem much better – the new horror sequel from Blumhouse is predicted to be the top film, even with the re-release of KPop Demon Hunters.
With no big new movie releases this weekend, Ethan Hawke’s film is expected to stay at number one. It’s predicted to outperform titles like Chainsaw Man, the movie based on the Colleen Hoover novel Regretting You, and Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, which is now playing in more cinemas.
Early estimates show Black Phone 2 leading the weekend box office with around $7.6 million, including $2.3 million earned on Halloween. Regretting You is projected to come in second with $6.6 million, followed by Chainsaw Man at $5.5 million and Bugonia around $4.4 million. KPop Demon Hunters is also playing, but its second weekend is expected to be less successful than its debut in August.
Blumhouse’s 2022 horror film, The Black Phone, was a major success, earning $160 million at the box office and receiving positive reviews from both critics and viewers. This success led to a sequel, Black Phone 2, with Ethan Hawke reprising his role as the terrifying Grabber. Black Phone 2 opened with a domestic box office of $24 million, slightly higher than the original film’s opening three years prior, and is expected to surpass $60 million domestically this weekend.
Blumhouse’s Recent Slump Is Hard to Ignore

Universal Pictures
Blumhouse Productions had a very successful year for horror in 2023. They released several big hits, starting with M3GAN, which earned $181 million. That was followed by Insidious: The Red Door ($186M) and the blockbuster Five Nights at Freddy’s ($297M). Even The Exorcist: Believer, despite receiving negative reviews, made $136 million – more than four times its $30 million production cost. However, the film wasn’t considered successful enough, so plans for a sequel were cancelled.
Despite eight new horror movies releasing in 2024 and 2025 so far (not including Black Phone 2), their combined box office earnings are only about the same as the original Five Nights at Freddy’s film. Currently, Black Phone 2 is the only movie this year expected to earn over $40 million. Wolf Man began the year with $35 million, but M3GAN 2.0 was a disappointment, finishing its run in theaters with just $39 million—significantly less than the first M3GAN film.
While Black Phone 2 has improved things somewhat, Blumhouse is still depending on the sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, scheduled for release on December 5, 2025, to boost their yearly performance.
