Nexon’s hit role-playing game, Blue Archive, is dealing with a new wave of criticism following a recent hacking incident. Players are upset about a significant change to how the game’s ‘gacha’ system – which allows players to randomly acquire characters and items – works. Although the game celebrated its 5.5th anniversary in Japan with free rewards and new costumes, fans noticed the established system guaranteeing rewards after a certain number of tries had been replaced with a different one.
Blue Archive replaces its fan-favourite 200-pull spark system with a 50/50 pity mechanic
So, in Blue Archive, things used to work where every pull I did got me one step closer to getting a specific character. It took 200 pulls to fill up that ‘spark’ meter, and then I could trade those points for whoever was featured on the current banner. Honestly, it was awesome because I could actually plan how much I needed to spend to guarantee getting the units I really wanted.
What players liked most about this feature was that even if they got a rare item early on, they could keep trying until they reached 200 points and then trade those points for another character or pieces of a character. This was particularly helpful when there were several different characters available in the same event.
Players argue the new pity system makes collecting multiple characters more expensive
The recent 5.5 update changed how you get new characters. It now uses a standard “pity” system common in similar games: you’re guaranteed to get the special character after 100 tries. If you don’t win on your first try (lose the ’50/50′), you’ll definitely get them within another 100 pulls, for a total of 200. But once you do get the featured character, the counter resets, starting the process over.
This update might be helpful for players who only want one specific character. However, many fans feel it will make it more difficult to collect several of the featured characters. Before this change, you could still get another featured unit around the 200-pull mark, but that’s no longer an option. Because of this, some players are suggesting holding off on pulling for now.
As a Blue Archive player, I’m really frustrated right now! A lot of us are upset about the recent changes to the gacha system. It feels like Nexon has actually made it worse. People are warning new and returning players to be careful because getting the characters we want is going to take way more pulls – meaning a lot more spending. I completely agree with one fan who said that Nexon’s greed has really hurt the game, and this new pity system is honestly the worst they’ve ever implemented.
