Blondie Drummer Clem Burke Dies at 70 After Secret Cancer Battle

Blondie drummer Clem Burke has died aged 70 following a ‘private battle with cancer’.

On a deeply sorrowful note, I share with you today the heartbreaking news that our cherished friend and bandmate, Clem Burke, has left us after a quiet struggle with cancer. This information was posted on our Facebook page on Monday.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but gush over Clem. He wasn’t merely a drummer; he was the pulsating rhythm of Blondie that ignited our songs and electrified our performances. His raw talent, relentless energy, and boundless passion for music set him apart, and the indelible mark he left on our sound and success is beyond quantification.

‘Beyond his musicianship, Clem was a source of inspiration both on and off the stage.

His lively personality, contagious energy, and unwavering dedication inspired everyone fortunate enough to cross paths with him. Clem’s impact reached much further than just Blondie.

As a diehard devotee of Rock & Roll, I’ve proudly branded myself as a “Rock & Roll Survivalist.” I’ve had the privilege to perform and work alongside music legends such as Eurythmics, Ramones, Bob Dylan, Bob Geldof, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, Chequered Past, The Fleshtones, The Romantics, Dramarama, The Adult Net, The Split Squad, The International Swingers, L.A.M.F., Empty Hearts, Slinky Vagabond, and even the iconic Go-Go’s. It’s been an incredible journey!

His impact and accomplishments stretch across many decades and various musical styles, making a lasting impression on everything he worked on.

‘We extend our deepest condolences to Clem’s family, friends, and fans around the world.

As a connoisseur of life’s rhythm, I can confidently say that his impact will resonate deeply and enduringly. Through the vast body of melodies he crafted and the multitude of hearts he reached, his spirit continues to thrive and inspire new generations.

During the tough times ahead following Dr. Burke’s significant passing, we kindly request seclusion for our grief. Farewell and best wishes, Dr. Burke.

‘Debbie, Chris, and the entire Blondie family.’

Born and raised in New Jersey, Clem became a member of Blondie soon after they came together in 1975, and remained with them for their entire music journey.

He significantly influenced the growth of the band, inviting his friend Gary Valentine to become a bassist, and moreover, he managed to keep them united, resolving conflicts when founding members Debbie and Chris were contemplating parting ways.
