2025’s first major Counter-Strike tournament is referred to as the BLAST Austin Major. This significant event will unfold at the Moody Center in Austin, marking the peak of Counter-strike competitions. For ardent CS:GO fans, this is an opportunity to witness their beloved teams in action, live and in person, at a Major that promises electrifying excitement. Here’s essential information about the BLAST Austin Major, including the competing teams, format, outcomes, and more.
What is the tournament format?
The BLAST Austin Major’s structure has been designed by Valve, comprising four distinct phases. The concluding phase is the Playoffs, where the ultimate champion will be crowned. Here’s an explanation of what each stage entails regarding its format:
1. Group Stages: Teams are divided into groups, and they play against each other within their respective groups to determine standings.
2. Upper Bracket: The higher-ranked teams from the group stages advance to the Upper Bracket, where they compete in a single-elimination tournament.
3. Lower Bracket: The lower-ranked teams from the group stages move to the Lower Bracket and also participate in a single-elimination tournament.
4. Playoffs (Grand Final): The winners of the Upper and Lower Brackets face off in a best-of-three series, with the victor being declared the champion.
Stage 1
- Sixteen team Swiss System format
- Elimination and advancement matches are best of three series
- All other matches are best of one
- The top eight teams move ahead to Stage 2
- The bottom eight teams face elimination.
Stage 2
- Sixteen team Swiss System format
- Elimination and advancement matches are best of three series
- All other matches are best of one
- The top eight teams move ahead to Stage 3
- The bottom eight teams face elimination.
In the latter part, the process mirrors the previous one, enabling the leading squads to advance further.
Stage 3
- Sixteen team Swiss system format
- Elimination and Advancement matches are bo3
- All other matches are bo1
- The top eight teams advance to the Playoffs
- The Bottom eight teams are eliminated from the event
Playoffs
- Single elimination bracket
- All matches are best of three series.
Prize Pool and Distribution
At the Austin Major tournament, just like in Counter-Strike Majors, a total prize purse of $1,250,000 will be up for grabs. The lion’s share of this money, around 50%, goes to the winning team. Other top teams will also receive considerable sums of prize money, as outlined in the Austin Major’s prize distribution.
