Blake Lively’s thriller flop is on TV tonight
As a seasoned gamer and cinephile, I’ve seen more than my fair share of blockbusters and indie films alike. The Rhythm Section, starring Blake Lively, is one that slipped past me at the box office but has now found its way onto my screen due to its TV debut tonight.
It Ends With Us has been a hit this summer, but not all Blake Lively movies have been winners.
Tonight, you have another opportunity to watch one of her latest disappointments, “The Rhythm Section,” which initially underperformed at the box office in early 2020. You might want to judge for yourself whether its poor performance back then was truly warranted or just a fluke.
Additionally featuring Jude Law and Sterling K Brown, the thrilling show will be broadcast on Film4 at 11:20 PM this evening (Sunday, September 8th).
Following the plotline of Mark Burnell’s 1999 book with the same title, the narrative centers around Stephanie Patrick (portrayed by Lively), who embarks on an inquiry to uncover the authentic facts surrounding a tragic plane crash that took the lives of her family members three years before.
This harrowing incident drove her towards a self-destructive phase, where she fought inner turmoil with substance abuse and an unquenchable desire for retribution. When she learns from journalist Keith Proctor (Raza Jaffrey) that the plane crash wasn’t accidental and the culprit is in London, Stephanie decides to intervene.
With assistance from a retired CIA agent named Iain Boyd (Law), Stephanie embarks on a quest for revenge, aiming to retrieve the life that was taken from her along the way.
The movie was directed by Reed Morano (known for “The Handmaid’s Tale”) and produced by Eon Productions, who usually create films centered around James Bond. This production company made only three movies not related to 007, and as a spy-thriller, it fit nicely within their niche.
Initially, I found myself quite captivated by the film “The Rhythm Section“, but it seems that not everyone shared my enthusiasm. Upon its release, it garnered a rather disappointing 29% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 189 reviews, with an audience rating of 44%. This suggests that the movie didn’t quite hit the mark for many viewers and critics alike.
At that point, the film failed spectacularly at the box office, earning only $6 million despite having a production budget of $50 million. Its debut weekend even set a dismal record as the poorest opening for any movie screened on more than 3,000 screens.
According to Digital Spy, the film received three stars, with particular praise for Blake Lively’s portrayal of Stephanie. Despite minor issues with the script and tempo, Lively makes Stephanie a character you can wholeheartedly support.
The Rhythm Section is airing on Film4 at 11.20pm tonight (Sunday, September 8).
