Blake Lively’s It Ends With Us co-star Jenny Slate breaks silence on Justin Baldoni lawsuit
As a woman who has had my fair share of experiences in the entertainment industry, I find myself deeply moved by the recent turn of events surrounding Blake Lively and her co-star, Armie Hammer, in the film “It Ends With Us.
Actress Jenny Slate publicly stands by her co-star Blake Lively in response to Lively’s legal action against Justin Baldoni.
A week ago, Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, claiming that he had sexually harassed her and created an unpleasant working atmosphere during the filming of It Ends With Us. In this production, he was both her director and co-actor. However, Baldoni has strongly refuted these accusations.
In her grievance, Lively alleged that Baldoni conspired with his publicist, Jennifer Abel, and crisis management expert, Melissa Nathan (who has worked with Johnny Depp in the past), to harm her public image. However, Abel has refuted any involvement in a ‘smear campaign.’
After the lawsuit, both Brandon Sklenar, Lively’s co-star, and Colleen Hoover, the writer of the book the movie is adapted from, have publicly supported her in the media.
Currently, Slate, aged 42, who portrayed the sibling of Baldoni’s on-screen character in the film, has joined the collective in expressing her thoughts in an interview with the Today show.
Speaking as a fellow cast member and friend of Blake Lively, I express my backing as she stands up against individuals accused of orchestrating an assault on her reputation.
‘Blake is a trusted leader, a loyal companion, and a pillar of emotional support for me, as well as many others who are fortunate to know and care about her. The information unveiled concerning the attack on Blake is incredibly grim, unsettling, and poses a significant threat. I want to express my admiration for my friend, commend her courage, and pledge my solidarity with her.’
Yesterday’s revelation stems from my personal review of a New York Times article I recently shared on my Instagram Stories. This piece contains an extensive legal complaint filed against Baldoni, aged 40. As a lifestyle expert, it’s crucial for me to stay informed about such matters and share them with you.
Over the link to the report he wrote: ‘For the love of God, read this.’
He also tagged Lively, 37, in his post and added a red heart emoji next to her name.
In the movie version of “It Ends With Us,” which is a film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s romance novel, Sklenar portrays Atlas Corrigan – a figure who is Lily Bloom’s childhood friend, first boyfriend, and first love, as played by Lively.
Last Friday, December 20th, Lively submitted a complaint to the California Civil Rights Department against Baldoni, alleging that he had engaged in sexual harassment and orchestrated a supposed defamatory campaign as a form of retribution for her voicing concerns about his unsuitable conduct on set.
In simpler terms, back in 1923, the actress who was the focus of a film had earlier spoken out, asking people not to criticize or condemn her excessively as the movie was causing some uproar and debate during its promotional period that summer.
During that period, Lively faced criticism as she deliberately kept distance from Baldoni during their film promotion duties despite working together on the movie.
As fans observed that Lively stopped following him, along with several other cast members, on social platforms, whispers of a tension or disagreement between the main characters started circulating.
In her court case, she asserts that Baldoni orchestrated a defamatory campaign against her, bringing up old interviews of Lively that people on social media found offensive, causing an influx of unfavorable comments.
Critics on social media have taken issue with the actress from Gossip Girl, who they feel has been too flippant and ironic, even when addressing sensitive topics like domestic abuse – as seen in her interviews about the novel “It Ends With Us”.
In August, Sklenar posted on Instagram asking fans not to criticize or blame the women involved with the film too harshly.
He asked fans to focus on message of It Ends With Us, which is centered around domestic violence and a traumatic love story.
Maybe he implied an extra layer of meaning by saying the movie serves as a stark wake-up call for those men who should clean up their act, assume accountability for themselves, and be responsible for their decisions.
He stated that criticizing or blaming the women who poured their emotions and creativity into this movie, as they are deeply invested in its meaningful message, appears to be inconsistent with the film’s purpose. In fact, it goes against the very essence of what the film stands for.
‘Regardless of any speculations about what took place off-screen, we hope that our objectives in creating this movie remain clear and unchanged.’
Sklenar added: ‘It’s been disheartening to see the amount of negativity being projected online.’
Additionally, he mentioned that a person quite near to him is going through a comparable, harmful relationship, much like the one portrayed in the film. He stated that it was instrumental in saving her life, and expressed a sense of duty to convey this story and amplify its message even more.
Sklenar isn’t the sole contributor to ‘It Ends With Us’, as there are others who have likewise backed Lively’s work.
A few days ago, following Lively’s filing, Hoover, who was also an executive producer for the project, finally spoke up about the legal dispute involving the film’s main actors.
She shared a photo of herself and Lively posing together that appeared to be from their promo tour.
In a letter, Hoover expressed his appreciation by saying: “From the moment we first crossed paths, you’ve consistently been honest, considerate, encouraging, and patient with me.
‘Thank you for being exactly the human that you are,’ she added. ‘Never change. Never wilt.’
Besides Sklenar and Hoover, several top-tier actors have spoken up in support of the actress as well.
In a collective announcement, America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel, who were previously costars with Baldoni in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, expressed appreciation and support for their long-standing friend and co-star, praising her courage for standing up against him.
Director Paul Feig, who collaborated with Lively on A Simple Favor and its follow-up project, expressed support for the actress as well.
He wrote that she ‘truly did not deserve any of this smear campaign against her,’ adding that he believes it was ‘awful she was put through this.’
Amber Heard added her thoughts about the situation, stating that she is familiar with what it’s like to experience a defamatory campaign against oneself.
As a devoted admirer, I too express my solidarity with Blake Lively, echoing my conviction by posting on my Instagram Stories: “I stand with Blake.
