As a devoted cinephile with over three decades of immersion in cinema history and culture, this latest lawsuit between Alcon Entertainment, Tesla, Elon Musk, and Warner Bros. Discovery has piqued my interest significantly. The allegations that Tesla has copied scenes from the visually stunning masterpiece “Blade Runner 2049” to promote their Cybercab are not only intriguing but also somewhat disheartening as a lover of originality in art and storytelling.
A production company located in Los Angeles has filed a lawsuit against Tesla, Elon Musk (Tesla’s CEO), and Warner Bros. Discovery, claiming that Tesla copied key scenes from the 2017 movie “Blade Runner 2049” for promotional purposes of its new self-driving taxi service.
On Monday, Alcon Entertainment – the studio behind “Blade Runner 2049” (produced for Warner Bros.) – initiated a copyright-violation lawsuit in California.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m expressing my concern about an allegation that stirred up quite a buzz recently. It seems that Hollywood studios, Tesla, and Elon Musk are under scrutiny for potentially using AI to create visuals reminiscent of “Blade Runner 2049” scenes. This intriguing display was unveiled during the grand launch event for Tesla’s Cybercab on the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank.
The lawsuit states that Alcon flatly denied giving permission for any association between ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and Tesla, Elon Musk, or any companies owned by Musk, strongly expressing disagreement with such suggestions made by the defendants.
“Defendants then used an apparently AI-generated faked image to do it all anyway.”
On Monday, neither Warner Bros. Discovery from New York City nor Tesla from Austin provided an immediate response when approached by The Times regarding our request for a comment.
The requested production photo from Warner Bros. Discovery shows Ryan Gosling, the star of “Blade Runner 2049,” striding away from the camera against a barren, dystopian backdrop that resembles a desolate wasteland with rubble and red soil. In character as a futuristic bounty hunter, Gosling dons a brown trench coat, making his way towards a city skyline enveloped in thick, smoky haze of an orange tint.
In the streamed footage from Cybercab, there’s a figure – who bears a resemblance to Ryan Gosling in terms of physique and hairstyle – sporting a brown trench coat, standing on red soil as he gazes upon a metropolis shrouded in a thick, fiery veil of orange smog.
At the unveiling of the Cybercab, Elon Musk reportedly made mention of “Blade Runner 2049” when presenting the vehicle to a worldwide spectatorship.
A significant amount of expectation surrounds the Cybertruck, as Elon Musk has been promoting the concept of autonomous vehicles for quite some time without much delivery. Despite a dip in Tesla’s sales of its iconic electric cars at the beginning of 2024, the company boasts an $800-billion market value largely based on the assumption that it will outperform competitors and lead the growing robotaxi sector. However, whether or not Tesla is actually on track to develop the necessary technology for this goal is still uncertain.
The text mentions that it wasn’t merely by chance that Elon Musk talked about ‘Blade Runner 2049’, the only movie he specifically mentioned to introduce his concept of a self-driving, AI-operated cybercab. This film, as you may know, includes an artificially intelligent, autonomous vehicle prominently in its narrative.
Alcon Entertainment has requested a court trial, and they are seeking compensation that could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
