Blackpink pumps up the SoFi crowd with first U.S. show in two years

On Saturday evening at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, the K-pop girl band consisting of Rosé, Lisa, Jennie and Jisoo began their triumphant North American tour leg. This was their first U.S. performance following a two-year hiatus during which they focused on individual careers; since the conclusion of the Born Pink tour in 2023, this marked their return to the stage together for a concert in America.

On Saturday night, the playlist was similar to the one from Goyang, South Korea last weekend, with only Lisa’s solo part being different. Instead of singing “New Woman” and “Rockstar,” which were performed for the initial tour dates, she chose the more intense songs “Thunder” and “Fxck Up the World.

In a stunning two-piece Louis Vuitton outfit, Lisa embodied the spirit of Wonder Woman, captivating the audience as electricity danced around her on stage. Just as she did at Coachella earlier this year, where she showcased songs from “Alter Ego,” Lisa demonstrated why she stands out among K-pop’s most mesmerizing performers.

The four individual projects showcase unique sounds, and viewing them consecutively underscores the artistic versatility within Blackpink. Jennie, who recently performed solo at Coachella, embraced her hip-hop roots by blending “Mantra,” “with the IE (way up),” and “like Jennie.” On the other hand, Jisoo charmed with the bubbly, electronic pop of “earthquake” and “Your Love.

In a humorous turn, clips of Rosé filming TikToks and munching on French fries backstage elicited chuckles from the spectators before her solo performance. As the moment arrived for her to step into the limelight, she adopted a more personal style, seated at the stage’s edge alongside guitarist Johnny “Natural” Najera.

Kicking off with melancholic hits “3am” and “Toxic Until the End,” Rosé ended her collection with the energetic, globally successful single “Apt.” Notably, during this track she invited a fan to join her on stage. In collaboration with Bruno Mars, this song was dropped in October and continues to hold a prominent position on the Billboard Hot 100.

Prior to their official launch in South Korea last weekend, Blackpink premiered “Jump”. This meant that fans in Los Angeles were already primed for the eagerly anticipated return single. As Blackpink took the stage and performed the catchy tune not just once, but twice, fans couldn’t help but jump and dance along throughout the performance.

After the initial performance, Rosé remarked, “The more I listen to this song, the more I find myself drawn to it.” She went on to express her personal opinion that it’s the most thrilling number for them to perform during their set.

As a fervent admirer of music, I found myself immersed in an electrifying blend of timeless classics and fresh sensations on the dance floor last Saturday. It was truly a spectacle that drew veterans of the K-pop scene alongside those just discovering its captivating rhythms.

Sydney Grube and Thet Aung made their way up to Sydney together specifically for the concert. Interestingly, while Thet Aung has been a devoted fan since the band’s inception, Sydney only recently started appreciating them after watching Lisa on HBO’s “White Lotus” back in February.

Grube stated that she initially began listening to each member’s solo work, but later found herself enjoying Blackpink’s music as well. She expressed her eagerness to witness their individual performances.

The concert brought together fans of various age groups, as numerous families dressed alike made their way there. On one occasion, Blackpink acknowledged all the “little Blinks” in the crowd – a number of whom weren’t even alive when the band first emerged in 2016.

9-year-old Tara Castro, sporting a Blackpink hat and glasses, expressed, “I wished they’d dance even more, but they did an excellent job.” She adores them as her favorite K-pop group.

Fans eagerly anticipate fresh music from Blackpink, possibly an entire album, since their tour schedule stretches into January. Here’s hoping that these performances in our region won’t be their final ones.
