Black Superman Movie Was Canceled by David Zaslav, But Could Still Happen

David Zaslav canceled Warner Bros. Pictures’ plans to make a Black Superman movie.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to be part of the excitement surrounding the shared universe created by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios, affectionately known as the DCU. Led by the visionary duo, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the first project in this epic saga is 2024’s Creature Commandos. Meanwhile, Superman graces our screens in U.S. theaters, setting the stage for an incredible journey through the DC Universe!

Why was the Black Superman movie canceled by David Zaslav?

Prior to the appointment of Gunn and Safran as co-chairmen and co-CEOs at DC Studios, Warner Bros. had already conceived a plan for “Black Superman during the civil rights era,” as reported by The Wall Street Journal. This project was being penned by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, rejected the concept as he found the script to be overly progressive or socially conscious.

In a 2021 article published by The Hollywood Reporter, it was reported that J.J. Abrams agreed to produce the Black Superman movie. Names under consideration for directing included J.D. Dillard, Steven Caple Jr., Regina King, and Shaka King. However, in 2022, Dillard clarified to The Wrap that he was never approached about the possibility of directing this film.

There’s a possibility that the project could yet continue, since The Wall Street Journal’s report suggests that Gunn and Safran might attempt to produce the film at some point in the future.

As of now, I haven’t heard any formal announcement about a DCU Black Superman movie. However, after the release of Superman, we have Peacemaker Season 2 coming in August 2025. Following that, we can look forward to Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl on June 26, 2026, James Watkins’ Clayface on September 11, 2026, and the Lanterns television series is expected to premiere in 2026 as well.

Currently, various other DC Universe series under development are The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman, a second season of Creature Commandos, Waller, Paradise Lost, and many others such as Booster Gold.
