Black Phone 2 Trailer Reveals Ethan Hawke’s Killer Back From the Dead

In the debut trailer for “Black Phone 2“, Scott Derrickson’s sequel to his 2021 horror hit, Ethan Hawke is once again portraying one of contemporary horror’s most memorable serial killers known as The Grabber. Alongside Hawke, Mason Thames as Finn and Madeleine McGraw as Gwen are back in their roles from the original cast. Universal Pictures has finally revealed a sneak peek of this long-awaited sequel. Catch a glimpse of the trailer that’s now available to watch.

However, it seems that Hawke will find a way to reanimate The Grabber in the upcoming movie, despite his brutal and merciless character being defeated in the initial film. Derrickson provided an intriguing and plausible explanation when discussing with The Hollywood Reporter recently. While exhibiting the first trailer for Black Phone 2 at the pop culture event CCXP Mexico, audiences were left trembling in fear, as the director stated:

In the initial film, it was a ghost tale, but all the specters portrayed were victims, as is common in such stories. However, this time around, we have a malevolent ghost as our antagonist.

The sequel to “Black Phone,” titled “Black Phone 2,” is scheduled for release during the spooky month of October, on the 17th. Director Scott Derrickson’s frequent collaborator, C. Robert Cargill, is teaming up with him again to co-write the movie. Actors Jeremy Davies and Miguel Mora will reprise their roles, while Arianna Rivas and Demián Bichir have joined the cast to portray new characters.

‘Black Phone 2’ Is “More Violent, Scarier and More Graphic”

From the trailer, it is evident that The Grabber has moved to another dimension, making him an even more chilling character than before. In a return to his horror roots, director Scott Derrickson seems to be exploring Black Phone 2. There are hints of his 2008 film Sinister, one of the scariest movies ever made, and this time he’s using a wintry landscape as a haunting setting. Unlike its prequel, Black Phone 2 appears to be a distinct movie with a different storyline. The plot synopsis for the sequel goes as follows:

Four years past, a 13-year-old named Finn took the life of his captor and fled, leaving him as the lone survivor of The Grabber. Yet, evil that is beyond mortal bounds persists… and once more, the phone is ringing. Renowned for his four Academy Award® nominations, Ethan Hawke resumes his darkest role yet as The Grabber plots vengeance against Finn (Mason Thames) from the other side of the grave, by tormenting his younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).

17-year-old Finn grapples with life post his captivity ordeal, while headstrong 15-year-old Gwen starts experiencing mysterious calls from a black phone in her dreams and ominous visions of three boys being pursued at a winter retreat called Alpine Lake. Driven to unravel the mystery and alleviate the distress for both herself and her brother, Gwen convinces Finn to venture to the camp during a wintry tempest. At the camp, she unearths a chilling connection between The Grabber and her family’s past. Together, they confront a formidable adversary who has amplified his power in death and holds more significance for them than either could anticipate.

Derrickson aims to create an even more intense and terrifying journey for the sequel. In this next installment, he plans to unleash a monster, demonstrating The Grabber’s abilities as a fearsome spirit. When speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, he shares why Black Phone 2 promises a unique and distinctive experience:

A middle school-based horror film for adolescence differs significantly from a high school one, with an escalation of terror due to this difference. I considered making another movie first before revisiting these characters, allowing me to capture them at a later, more mature stage in life. This would make the storyline more intense, violent, frightening, and explicit. A portion of that increased severity stems from the older age of the children involved.
