As autumn arrives and pumpkin spice lattes become widely available, there’s an exciting lineup of horror movies coming up in theaters. However, among all these eagerly awaited films, the highly anticipated sequel is undoubtedly Black Phone 2. We’ve been eager for this sequel since its official confirmation two years ago. The original Black Phone film was praised for offering a unique and gory twist to the horror genre, while its sequel has drawn some favorable comparisons to the iconic A Nightmare on Elm Street, with new comments from one of its cast members added to the conversation.
Black Phone 2 Star Compares Ethan Hawke’s Grabber To Freddy Krueger
Mason Thames returns for “The Black Phone 2,” joining several cast members from the original film including Ethan Hawke who will once again play The Grabber, as well as Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming sequel, he shared some insights on what we can expect:
In this cinematic experience, the character of Grabber evokes strong Freddy Krueger vibes – but with a more palpable rage and an intensity that makes him downright chilling, as he seems to be solely focused on my demise. Frankly, he’s downright terrifying. The film itself, along with the supernatural abilities he possesses, is nothing short of mind-blowing, leaving me breathless with fear because it’s nearly indescribable – like an unstoppable force personified in a man. Simply put: Grabber is a horror icon I won’t soon forget.
In the 2021 film, Mason Thames’ character Finney managed to defeat the sinister serial killer called The Grabber at the end. But since the storyline of The Black Phone revolves around communication from beyond the grave, encounters between Finney and The Grabber aren’t necessarily finished. Similarly to Freddy Kreuger, it seems that The Grabber can now torment and hurt people in their dreams.
Fans Have Been Comparing Black Phone 2 To A Nightmare On Elm Street, Too
As a die-hard horror fan, it’s quite an honor for me to say that Mason Thames’ comparison of his character’s villainy to Freddy Krueger is nothing short of flattering. I mean, just the mention of Freddy Krueger sends shivers down my spine, and it’s been over a decade since we’ve seen a new Elm Street installment. The terrifying images of his gruesome exploits still haunt us horror enthusiasts!
However, the remarks made by Thames resonate with what viewers have been expressing about Black Phone 2 since its latest trailer was posted on YouTube a week ago. Here’s a glimpse at some of the most popular comments:
- “They turned Black Phone 2 into an 80s supernatural slasher like Nightmare on Elm Street and I’m all for it.”– @XMen-m1t
- “Freddy Krueger: I’m so proud of you, son… The Grabber: TY, dad…” – @nightponyinrface6009
- “I know many of us compared it to Nightmare on Elm Street after the first trailer, but….this REALLY elevates that, especially with the dreams, and the people getting thrown around, but then the people who are awake seeing no one. It really reminds me of the first death in the first NOES. I’m so hyped for this!!”– @h20delorian
- “Hey, if we can’t get another Nightmare on Elm Street, I’ll take this instead”– @SelfDescribedNerd
The Black Phone is a film inspired by a 2004 short story penned by author Joe Hill, son of Stephen King. The screenplay for this movie adaptation was crafted by Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. With a production budget of approximately $17 million, it grossed an impressive $161.4 million globally. The upcoming sequel is based on an idea pitched by Joe Hill to Derrickson, with the original scriptwriting team returning. You can catch it in cinemas starting October 17.
