Director Ryan Coogler announced that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever performed better on Disney+ than one of Marvel’s biggest hits. This news follows the record-breaking success of his upcoming 2025 horror film, Sinners, which received an unprecedented 16 Oscar nominations.
What did Ryan Coogler say about Black Panther 2’s streaming success?
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Ryan Coogler revealed that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been streamed more often on Disney+ than the original Black Panther from 2018. Coogler explained that making the 2022 sequel was especially difficult because it had to be rewritten after the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, and the production team also had to cope with their own grief over his loss.
He realized he was stronger than he thought, which was the most important takeaway for him. He also noticed that the movie is watched by many more people at home than his other film as a Panther, and he believes viewers are intentionally seeking out the emotional experience it provides.
Director Ryan Coogler revealed last December that work on Black Panther 3 is well underway. Reports indicate the movie could begin filming in London on June 15, 2026. In addition to Letitia Wright reprising her role as Shuri, there’s speculation that Academy Award winner Denzel Washington might join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the new film, following hints that Coogler was creating a role for him. Rumors also suggest Damson Idris, known for his role in Snowfall, could take on the mantle of Black Panther. While the studio hasn’t officially confirmed any of this, Idris was recently seen with Black Panther veteran Angela Bassett – who was dressed as Queen Ramonda – at a Vogue event.
