Warning: spoilers for some Black Mirror episodes.
As a huge fan, I was so excited to see “Black Mirror” give us a follow-up to one of its classic episodes! It really got me thinking about other stories within that show that deserve to be explored further. “Black Mirror,” created by Charlie Brooker, is easily one of the best sci-fi series ever made, and it’s amazing to think it first came out in 2011. Now, we’re getting ready for the eighth season – I can’t wait!
Each episode of Black Mirror features a standalone story, but subtle connections link them together, creating a shared universe. The show explores how advanced technology might impact our future lives – everything from our health and relationships to society as a whole – and it often does so with dramatic and unsettling storylines.
Because Black Mirror is structured as a series of standalone stories, most episodes don’t have direct sequels. The exception is “USS Callister,” which received a follow-up episode, “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” in season 7. Still, there are other Black Mirror episodes that would also benefit from a continuation.
Beyond the Sea
Season 6, Episode 3
The movie “Beyond the Sea,” written by Brooker and directed by John Crowley, is set in a stylized 1969. It tells the story of astronauts Cliff (Aaron Paul) and David (Josh Hartnett) who are on a six-year space mission. To cope with the long journey, they have robotic copies of themselves back on Earth, allowing them to occasionally transfer their minds and spend time with their families.
When something terrible happens, this tendency can become extreme, leading to even worse outcomes. A follow-up to “Beyond the Sea” could delve into the events aboard the spaceship between Cliff and David following David’s actions, and how both men cope with the resulting tragedies upon returning to Earth.
The episode “Beyond the Sea” revealed that there’s opposition to artificial humans. Given the events that unfolded, it will be compelling to see how the world responds and what the future holds for these artificial beings.
Fifteen Million Merits
Season 1, Episode 2
The story “Fifteen Million Merits” takes place in a contained world where people power society by cycling on exercise bikes – earning a currency called “merits” in the process. It follows Bing, played by Daniel Kaluuya, who discovers Abi (Jessica Brown Findlay) and her talent for art. He encourages her to try out for “Hot Shot,” a virtual talent competition that could offer a life of wealth if she wins.
The plan unexpectedly changes course, and Bing, feeling accountable, resolves to fix things. The story, “Fifteen Million Merits,” is set entirely within this isolated world, offering only a quick glimpse of the outside and the comfortable lives of those who have escaped it.
A follow-up to “Fifteen Million Merits” could explore what life is like for Bing and Abi now that they’re living comfortably. It could show how their new TV jobs have changed them and whether the world they live in has really improved at all.
Be Right Back
Season 2, Episode 1
The Black Mirror episode “Be Right Back” is considered a standout, and many viewers feel it deserves a follow-up. The story centers around Martha (Hayley Atwell), who is devastated when her boyfriend, Ash (Domhnall Gleeson), dies in a car crash. To help her grieve, she tries a service that creates a digital version of Ash she can talk to.
I’ve been following Ash’s online life – his posts, everything. It’s pretty wild because Martha actually went and built a robot body that looks exactly like him! She figured she could upload his digital self into it. Honestly, it sounded amazing at first, but things quickly started to fall apart. It wasn’t the solution we all hoped for.
A follow-up to “Be Right Back” could explore the relationship between Martha and the android Ash after they became parents, and also show how their daughter has dealt with growing up with an android who was a version of her late father.
Black Museum
Season 4, Episode 6
The Black Mirror episode “Black Museum” is different from most because it’s structured around several smaller stories. The episode centers on Nish (Letitia Wright) who, while road-tripping through the desert, stops to recharge her electric car. She passes the time by visiting a museum dedicated to crime, where the owner, Rolo (Douglas Hodge), shares the histories behind the objects on display.
The anthology features unsettling tales like a doctor hooked on his patients’ suffering, a toy monkey possessed by a deceased woman’s spirit, and a holographic criminal designed for public torment. The episode, titled “Black Museum,” concludes with a surprising revelation, making it a strong candidate for a follow-up story.
It’s worth exploring if Nish has helped other people who were wronged, and whether other museums nationwide could benefit from someone with Nish’s ability to teach understanding and a sense of righteous retribution.
San Junipero
Season 3, Episode 4
The episode “San Junipero” is set in a vibrant beach town of the same name. There, a shy woman named Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) falls for the more outgoing Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). However, San Junipero isn’t what it seems – it’s a computer simulation where people who have died can continue to live, and the elderly can experience life as their younger selves.
The surprising reveal in “San Junipero” centers on the lives of Yorkie and Kelly outside of the virtual world, and how they overcome their challenges. The episode suggests there are many more stories to be told about the people who live in and visit this unique resort.
Look, a follow-up to “San Junipero” doesn’t need to focus on Yorkie and Kelly’s life after they found happiness. What I’d love to see is an expansion of that world – more stories set within that digital afterlife, exploring other characters and their journeys. It’s a rich concept, and I think there’s so much potential beyond just revisiting those two.
