Charlie Brooker, the creator of Black Mirror, has addressed concerns from viewers who feel the series features too many well-known personalities.
Originally airing on Channel 4, the anthology series with a dystopian theme transitioned to Netflix in 2016, and since then has attracted more prominent Hollywood stars. For example, the recently released seventh season boasts actors like Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, Chris O’Dowd, and Awkwafina.
In a conversation with Digital Spy, Brooker humorously responded to criticisms about the show featuring more famous personalities: “At times I’ve heard people say, ‘Ah, it’s just famous faces now on Black Mirror!’ That’s how I imagine them complaining!
It seems to me that perhaps they haven’t realized that we offer a variety of episodes highlighting skills they may be unaware of.
In addition to discussing other aspects of the show, the production leader mentioned some details about the overall casting process. He acknowledged that they often receive approaches from talented individuals, suggesting they are fortunate in their casting endeavors.
An agent phoned me saying, ‘He could act as a bin character in the show for Charlie.’ Finding a bin proved to be challenging; we gave it some thought.
Brooker often finds himself thinking about a specific individual while writing, and on occasion, this person has unexpectedly become part of the story itself, which is quite remarkable.
He went on to say, “I hope we’ve put together a great variety,” he added. “We’re a relatively brief engagement for actors, which draws in many prominent figures. However, it’s equally crucial that we include new talents you might not recognize yet.
Additionally, Brooker has shared insights into the origins of the follow-up to ‘USS Callister’ from season 4, as revealed in the latest season.
