Mike Gamble, Executive Producer at BioWare, announced that the upcoming Mass Effect series on Amazon will feature a brand new story. It won’t be a remake of the original trilogy starring Commander Shepard. Gamble shared this news in a blog post on BioWare’s website, as he does each year for N7 Day (November 7th).
Bioware Reveals a New Original Story for Mass Effect on N7 Day
November 7th is a special day for BioWare fans, but this year, many approached it with little hope, with some even saying they weren’t expecting anything at all. Amidst this disappointment, rumors circulated about the future of the franchise. Some speculated that the project first hinted at in 2021 could be a complete reboot of the series’ storyline.

Mike Gamble actually recognized these sentiments in his N7 Day blog post.
We’re aware of the recent buzz, and we know you’re passionate about the future of Mass Effect. So, let’s be clear: a new Mass Effect game is currently being made, and both EA and BioWare are dedicated to continuing the series’ story.
The executive producer explained that the studio wants to create a new story that doesn’t interfere with the experiences and choices players have already made in the Mass Effect games.
The new show will tell a fresh story set within the established timeline, taking place after the events of the original trilogy. It won’t revisit Commander Shepard’s adventures – that story belongs to the players, after all.

This is good news for fans of Mass Effect, who have faced a lot of disappointments with the series recently. However, it might not fully reassure those who remember past attempts to revive beloved franchises that didn’t go well.
Amazon and BioWare Share a History of Failed Revivals
One year ago, BioWare released one of its most anticipated titles yet, Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The studio announced they were bringing back the beloved saga after ten years, but the new game didn’t live up to expectations. Many fans felt it completely missed the mark, arguing that it had changed so much from the original series that it was hardly recognizable as the same franchise.

Critics strongly disliked the game because it didn’t fit with established storylines and contained a lot of unnecessary, biased political rhetoric. This combination made the game unappealing to most players. As a result, the studio had to give the game away as a free bonus with purchases made through Amazon Australia.
Many now view Veilguard as a cautionary tale, rather than a triumphant comeback story.
Famously, Amazon made a similar attempt to expand a legendary body of work.

The streaming service launched the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on September 1st, 2022. Costing a staggering $1 billion to produce, it remains the most expensive TV series ever made, meaning its success was crucial.
Honestly, it really didn’t live up to expectations. I noticed a lot of the same complaints from both critics and fans that I remember from when Dragon Age first came out. It’s frustrating because it feels like Amazon and Bioware keep making the same mistakes – the storytelling, the visuals, everything just feels…similar in a disappointing way.

Now that both companies are working on the new Mass Effect series, it’s understandable why fans are worried about where the story will go.
Even though the new Mass Effect story isn’t connected to the original trilogy, are you worried about its future, or are you optimistic that it will be a great addition to the series? Let us know what you think in the comments!
