It’s exciting news that the long-awaited Netflix adaptation of the popular BioShock video game series has received significant updates on its storyline. Development for this project started in 2022, with Francis Lawrence – known for directing The Hunger Games films – set to guide the live-action transformation of this beloved gaming franchise.
What is the new BioShock movie update?
In a recent conversation with The Direct, producer Roy Lee shared intriguing updates about the progress and storyline of the upcoming BioShock movie. Lee confirmed that following his work directing Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is currently being filmed in Spain, Lawrence will take on the BioShock project next. Additionally, he disclosed that the script for the BioShock movie is currently undergoing refinements until Lawrence completes work on the latest Hunger Games prequel.
Essentially, Lee explained that due to a slight delay in BioShock, additional script work was required. Concurrently, they filmed The Long Walk as this was underway. However, Lee was already obligated to participate in the next Hunger Games film. So, we’re simply waiting for him once the Hunger Games production wraps up, and the script for our project is being fine-tuned at the moment.
Moreover, Lee mentioned that the Netflix version of the movie is certain to draw inspiration from the initial release of the BioShock video game series, which debuted in 2007.
He shared that Netflix is being secretive about it, but it’s clear that the upcoming series will draw inspiration from the original BioShock game.
The main story of this game is set in an imaginary underwater metropolis named Rapture, during the year 1960. Your character, Jack, ventures into this city to uncover some truths. While there, he confronts distorted humans in diving gear and young females who have been genetically altered. The popularity of the initial BioShock game led to two additional sequels: BioShock 2 released in 2010, followed by BioShock Infinite in 2013.
Initially, screenwriter Michael Green was connected to create the script for the movie adaptation when Netflix announced it. However, in May 2025, it came out that Justin Rhodes from Terminator: Dark Fate had taken over the task, working on a fresh draft of the screenplay.
