Three years ago, Netflix announced plans to make a movie based on the popular 2k Games video game, but there haven’t been many updates since. Many people thought the project had been cancelled, but producer Roy Lee recently confirmed it’s still in development.
Lee explained that the project was delayed because other films took priority. Specifically, he mentioned The Long Walk and the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, scheduled for release in December, as the main reasons for the hold-up.
Lee explained they’re currently waiting for the final touches on the movie, as post-production will continue until at least September. Once that’s done, they’ll move forward with releasing it. Both Netflix and Take-Two are eager to see the film launched, hoping to time the release with any new versions of the game.
With major projects like a Stephen King adaptation and a new Hunger Games movie already in the works, it makes sense that Michael Lawrence had to put the BioShock film on hold. Fortunately, the movie is still planned for Netflix and remains in development.
The BioShock Movie Gets an Encouraging Production Update
Lee shared a hopeful, though cautious, update on when production might begin for BioShock. He explained, “It’s making progress, but there are always potential roadblocks.” He added that the team is aiming to start production next year, if everything goes as planned.
Viewers should temper their expectations for the upcoming BioShock movie. Director Francis Lawrence revealed at San Diego Comic Con in 2024 that the film won’t be a sprawling, large-scale science fiction story. Instead, it will focus on a more intimate and character-driven narrative.
BioShock Could Be What Netflix Needs to Get In on the Video Game IP Arms Race
The recent news about a BioShock movie is well-timed for Netflix. Adapting video games into movies and series is becoming a popular way for media companies to find fresh, new stories. Warner Bros. has already seen success with The Last of Us and is planning a Baldur’s Gate series. Paramount has Sonic, Universal released The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Amazon’s Prime Video is offering Fallout.
Netflix has seen great success turning video games into animated series, like with shows such as Castlevania and Arcane. However, its live-action adaptation of The Witcher has faced issues with long delays between seasons and a change in the main actor. While Netflix once planned a Resident Evil TV show, those plans were canceled after the movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City wasn’t well-received.
Netflix risks losing ground to competitors when it comes to adapting video games into live-action shows and movies, though a major release is still some time away. The upcoming BioShock movie, despite having a smaller budget, might help Netflix regain its competitive edge.
