Looking for something easy to watch? Neverwhere is perfect. This 1996 urban fantasy series has just six episodes, each around thirty minutes long, so you can finish it quickly. Best of all, it’s really enjoyable! While it’s not as polished as newer fantasy shows like House of the Dragon, that actually adds to its appeal.
Neil Gaiman, the creator of popular works like The Sandman, Good Omens, American Gods, and Coraline, also created Neverwhere. While most of his stories start as novels, Neverwhere began as a television series, though he later adapted it into a book. With a score of 7.2 on IMDb, it’s a slightly lesser-known work, but a must-see for fantasy enthusiasts.
What Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere Is About

Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere tells the story of Richard Mayhew, a businessman in London, whose life changes dramatically when he helps a strange woman named Door. After offering her assistance, Richard mysteriously vanishes from the world he knows – people can no longer see or acknowledge him. He finds himself existing in a hidden, parallel version of London called “London Below.”
London Below is similar to London Above, but its famous landmarks have taken on magical properties. For instance, Knightsbridge is known as “Night’s Bridge” and can drain a person’s life force. The people who live there, like Richard, are hidden from those in the normal world. Many of them are magical creatures or people from lost civilizations and different eras, such as Atlantis or ancient Rome.
Okay, so Richard’s life gets completely flipped upside down when he enters this hidden, magical London. He’s lost everything he knew and is desperate to get back to his old life. But it’s not simple – his ticket home hinges on protecting this incredible woman named Door, who’s being hunted, and trusting a seriously strange cast of characters he meets in this ‘London Below.’ It’s a wild ride, and he can’t do it alone!
Neverwhere Doesn’t Get Nearly Enough Attention

Neverwhere is a bit of a hidden treasure. Because it was a short, six-part series, it didn’t attract a large audience initially. It gained a dedicated, cult following after the story was adapted into a novel and released on DVD.
I’m so excited about this series! If you’re in the US, you can actually watch it for free on Pluto TV, or you can buy it on Prime Video. Some other countries have it on Netflix too. Trust me, if you’re into urban fantasy, you won’t be disappointed – it’s only about three hours long, and honestly, they just don’t make shows like Neverwhere anymore, even after all these years!
