Bindi Irwin has shared how she struggled with her self-worth during her battle with endometriosis.
This week, the 27-year-old shared openly on Instagram that she felt stuck in her body and struggled for years to get a diagnosis.
Over the past three years, doctors have removed more than 50 endometriosis lesions from my body. I also had a chocolate cyst taken out that was sticking my ovary to the side of my body, I shared.
I’ve been through so much – an appendectomy and a hernia repair, both incredibly painful. For a long time, I suffered in silence, trying to hide what I was going through. It was awful because doctors dismissed my pain, telling me it was just something women deal with. It felt like they weren’t taking me seriously, and I was left to cope with this unbearable pain on my own.
For ten years, I didn’t know what was wrong with me. Growing up and as a young woman, I constantly felt weak and lacked confidence. It felt like I was stuck inside my own body.
The Wildlife Warrior said she hopes to raise awareness for what she called an ‘invisible disease’.
We all need to work together to increase understanding of endometriosis, and women’s health in general. No one should have to struggle with these issues alone, she added.
It truly hurts me to hear you’re in pain, and I want you to know I believe you. Please keep searching for solutions, and remember to be kind to yourself – I understand how difficult things can be right now, Bindi said.
The comments section overflowed with positive messages, and Bindi’s mother, Terri Irwin, was among those offering support.
‘I am so proud of you for sharing your journey, Bindi,’ Terri wrote.
I’ve discovered that women experiencing pain should consider excision surgery over ablation, if possible. Everyone deserves a pain-free life!
Bindi’s husband, Chandler Powell, shared his support, saying he’s incredibly proud to be married to the strongest person he knows.
Robert Irwin publicly discussed his sister’s health last year, shortly after she shared that she was recovering from a long, 13-year struggle with endometriosis.
The 22-year-old celebrity, known for his conservation work, shared that Bindi was recovering well while also working to highlight the importance of the issue.
She’s managing well, but it’s a continuous challenge. Endometriosis isn’t something with a fast solution,” he explained to E! News.
Bindi has undergone multiple surgeries after being diagnosed with endometriosis three years ago.
Endometriosis is a painful condition where the tissue lining the uterus also grows outside of it.
‘It is something that needs to be in the forefront of discussions,’ Robert added.
‘Women’s health throughout history – and even now – is just underdiscussed, under-researched.
‘We really need advocates to stand up and to get the word out there, men and women.’
