Billy Bob Thornton recently shared the reasons behind his divorce from Angelina Jolie, which happened after just three years of marriage.
Actor Peter Landman, age 70, recently discussed this in an interview with Rolling Stone. He’s now married to Connie Angland.
Thornton and Jolie got married in Las Vegas in 2000, even though there was a 20-year age difference between them. Unfortunately, they divorced three years later.
He described the breakup as surprisingly amicable. They simply grew apart due to having very different lifestyles.
The actor shared that he and the actress, known for playing Maleficent, really enjoyed each other’s company, calling it one of the best experiences of his life.
Billy Bob Thornton said he and Angelina Jolie remain very close friends, even twenty years after their divorce.
They first met in 1999 while filming ‘Pushing Tin,’ and then surprised everyone by getting married in Las Vegas the next year.
In 2002, the couple announced they were adopting a son named Maddox. After they separated, she asked the court for sole custody of him.
In a 2016 interview with GQ, actor Billy Bob Thornton discussed his split from Angelina Jolie, admitting he always felt inadequate in the relationship.
Thornton admitted he felt awkward around wealthy and influential individuals, explaining he’d rather relax at home than go to fancy events like red carpet premieres.
In a previous interview with ABC News’ Nightline, he admitted he made mistakes in his marriage to Jolie.
I messed things up because I lacked confidence and didn’t believe I deserved her. We simply wanted different things out of life, and my own insecurities got in the way.
He went on to say he felt like a hidden figure, comparing himself to the Phantom of the Opera lurking in the shadows. He admitted some people believed he wasn’t worthy of being with her.
In a 2019 interview with Us Weekly, Thornton stated, ‘We’re close friends, and have been for a long time.’
The actor explained that they stay in touch. Although she doesn’t live nearby and they don’t get together often, they still talk regularly.
When they were deeply in love, the constant attention from the public was overwhelming – something Thornton still describes as ‘really strange’.
He recently told Rolling Stone that when he and his partner first became a couple, there was a lot of public and media attention on them, which felt strange.
We were stuck with nowhere to go, and occasionally we’d say something that the media quickly turned into a short, memorable quote.
He also talked about a well-known and scandalous rumor from that time: the claim that they wore vials filled with blood around their necks.
Thornton insisted the story has been blown wildly out of proportion.
He explained that the containers weren’t small bottles, but lockets – each one containing a single drop of their blood. He described it as a sentimental gesture, nothing more.
But over time, he said, public fascination twisted the gesture into something ‘negative.’
After going through it all, we’ll be completely drained and broken, living a dark and desperate existence – basically, just surviving by preying on each other.
The actor first mentioned the blood necklaces back in 2014 while speaking at Loyola Marymount University’s film school.
He said: ‘[A] vial of blood is very simple. Angie came home one day with a kit she bought.
It was one of those clear lockets – the kind you put a picture inside, like a photo of your grandmother, and wear as a necklace.
She suggested a symbolic act – cutting our fingers slightly and putting a drop of blood on lockets to wear as keepsakes, similar to how some people keep a baby’s hair in a locket.
The actor from Fargo explained, ‘It was the same idea. We actually wore small jars filled with blood around our necks.’
Billy Bob Thornton has four children: Amanda, 46, with his former partner Melissa Lee Gatlin; William, 32, and Harry, 30, with his ex-wife Pietra Dawn Cherniak; and Bella, 20, with Connie Angland.
Angelina Jolie, a mother to Maddox (24), Pax (21), Zahara (20), Shiloh (19), and 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, has often shared similar warm feelings publicly.
She shared in 2008 that she still had strong feelings for him and greatly admired him. She also expressed pride in having been married to him, even if only for a period of time.
