Billy Bob Thornton Reveals Taylor Sheridan’s Strict Script Rules for Landman Season 2

Taylor Sheridan has solidified himself as a force to be reckoned with in the television industry, crafting critically-acclaimed shows like Yellowstone, its predecessors 1883 and 1923, and the gangster series Tulsa King led by Sylvester Stallone. One of his latest projects, Landman, set to return for its second season soon, is now among his highly lauded creations. Starring Academy Award-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton, this drama delves into the tumultuous world of West Texas oil, focusing on Thornton’s character Tommy Norris, a crisis manager who juggles the intricacies of the oil industry and his personal family problems. In a recent interview with Awards Radar, Thornton shared insights about his collaborative efforts with Sheridan. And it seems that Sheridan is quite particular in his approach.

In their second team-up, Sheridan and Thornton worked together on the project known as “Landman,” following their previous collaboration on “1883.” As Thornton shared, when it comes to scripting for Sheridan, he maintains a firm control, but there’s some room for flexibility. Regarding their work on “1883,” Thornton elaborated:

In essence, Taylor’s scripts were fantastic and tightly written, but during our collaboration, Taylor has been quite flexible with me. There isn’t much room for improvisation in his work. Interestingly enough, Taylor and the Coen Brothers, whom I’ve worked with before, have followed their scripts more closely than anyone else I’ve ever collaborated with. However, Taylor approached our project as a partnership, giving me the freedom to occasionally add my own ideas. If he finds something appealing, he incorporates it. Remarkably, Taylor’s writing is so strong that I seldom feel the need to deviate from it.

Sheridan, known for his exceptional skills in episodic storytelling and being highly esteemed in the industry, has been widely acclaimed for his writing, particularly for projects such as Hell or High Water, Sicario, Wind River, and Yellowstone. Similarly, Thornton is recognized for both writing and directing films; he won an Oscar for Best Actor for his work on 1996’s Sling Blade.

What We Can Expect From ‘Landman’ Season 2

Drawing inspiration from Christian Wallace’s podcast titled “Boomtown,” which delved into the contemporary oil rush in West Texas, the TV series “Landman” was jointly developed by Wallace and Sheridan. The initial season of this Paramount+ production, which debuted last November, has been lauded by critics for its accurate representation of a challenging and perilous profession within the industry.

The upcoming second season of “Landman” is set to premiere on our streaming platform in November, with Timothy Olyphant reprising his role as the lead character, alongside an exceptional cast that includes Ali Larter, Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, Jacob Lofland, and Michelle Randolph. In addition, Academy Award nominee Sam Elliott will join the series for its second season, making it his second project with Sheridan after his captivating portrayal in the “Yellowstone” prequel, “1883”. As we gear up for the second season of “Landman”, Timothy Olyphant has given us a sneak peek into what’s to come.

I’ve been enjoying our filming for nearly a month and a half now, and I must say, the connections between us are growing deeper, and the cast is coming together wonderfully. Each day, it feels more authentic, which makes me extremely content. This season, we’re focusing more on relationships, and I couldn’t be happier about that.

The highly acclaimed initial season, made up of 10 episodes, from Landman can be streamed on Paramount+.
