Billie Piper’s Doctor Who Return: One Condition for Success!
I agree that Billie Piper should portray the Sixteenth Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’, but only if a specific condition is fulfilled. The ending of season 15 was filled with unexpected moments, such as Jodie Whittaker’s appearance and the absence of Carole Ann Ford. However, the most shocking twist by far was Ncuti Gatwa transforming into Billie Piper. It’s unclear what her character’s role will be in future episodes, as ‘Doctor Who’ failed to list her character as “the Doctor”, hinting that some mysterious Bad Wolf-like schemes might be in the works.
Despite exiting from the radiant halo of a departing Fifteenth Doctor, Piper is currently regarded as the Sixteenth Doctor, pending official confirmation from Doctor Who. Taking on such an iconic role carries a colossal risk that can hardly be overstated. Apart from the implications within the storyline – which are undeniably significant – there’s a lingering doubt about whether this bold decision could backfire catastrophically. As season 16 has not been officially announced, it may not be an immediate concern; however, if the TARDIS were to reappear on screens, Billie Piper’s Doctor would need to abide by one rule above all else.
Billie Piper’s Sixteenth Doctor Should Be Another Transitional Doctor, Like David Tennant’s Fourteenth
It’s The Only Way Billie Piper’s Sixteenth Doctor Can Work
In his return as the showrunner for Doctor Who, Russell T Davies introduced the idea of a transitional Doctor, which generally proved successful. David Tennant took on the role of the fourteenth official incarnation of the protagonist to lead the franchise through its 60th anniversary and offer a recognizable figure during tumultuous times. With a hint of nostalgia, Doctor Who aimed to reconnect with former fans and serve as a smooth transition into a fresh new era. Excluding the controversial introduction of bi-generational characters, episodes such as “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder,” and “The Giggle” marked a return to quality storytelling after the heavily criticized Flux season.
The role taken on by Billie Piper as the Sixteenth Doctor mirrors David Tennant’s role as the Fourteenth in many ways. Currently, “Doctor Who” is experiencing a significant transition period, and there’s a possibility that extended breaks in production could occur. If BBC continues producing the show without Disney or another external party, it might only release special episodes intermittently over the next few years. In such a scenario, having Billie Piper on board would be highly appropriate, much like how Tennant’s presence was crucial during the 60th anniversary specials.
The Sixteenth Doctor portrayed by Piper could make occasional appearances, especially during December when bells start ringing. She will be part of a limited number of stories that wrap up unresolved mysteries from the fifteenth season of ‘Doctor Who’, such as Susan’s guest appearance, the enigma of ‘The Boss’, and why the Doctor transformed into a character resembling Rose Tyler. As soon as ‘Doctor Who’ returns to its regular, full-time schedule, Piper can hand over the role to a brand-new actor who will take ‘Doctor Who’ into the years ahead.
It wouldn’t make sense to bring on a brand new actor as The Doctor in the uncertain state of Doctor Who, especially if they are a young, rising star who might not be able to stick with the show. Given Billie Piper’s long-term connection with Doctor Who and her popularity among RTD fans, she would be a more reliable choice for the role.
The Main Problem With Billie Piper As A Full-Time Doctor
The Thorny Side To Rose’s Return
If it turns out that Doctor Who is planning to have Billie Piper as a permanent Doctor starting from season 16 and beyond, I would disagree with this choice. It’s not about Piper herself, who is a fantastic actor and beloved for her portrayal of Rose Tyler, but rather the recurring nature of her presence that could be problematic.
Billie Piper wasn’t the first actor to play “Doctor Who” who appeared in the series in another role prior to becoming the lead character. For instance, Colin Baker portrayed Commander Maxil of Gallifrey before putting on his iconic multi-colored coat, and Peter Capaldi played various one-off characters in both “Doctor Who” and “Torchwood”. Notably, apart from Tennant’s tenure, “Doctor Who” hasn’t reprised a main cast member as the Doctor. However, during 2005 to 2006 (and again in 2008), Piper undoubtedly was a key cast member of the show.
There was a purpose behind the Fourteenth Doctor’s brief appearance and quick regeneration before settling down in Chiswick. The essence of ‘Doctor Who’ lies in its continuous evolution, changes, and the recurring cycle of new Time Lords and Ladies. Permanently keeping David Tennant as the Doctor would have been a step backwards – an obvious attempt to recreate past successes. Similarly, promoting Billie Piper from companion to the Sixteenth Doctor could have felt repetitive, rehashing old ground after multiple seasons.
Another concern arises: revisiting familiar territory since it was old ground before. A brief moment on screen and a solitary line certainly do not reveal the full character of the new Doctor. However, Sixteen’s enthusiastic demeanor and greeting “oh, hello” strongly echo Rose Tyler. The Fourteenth Doctor also demonstrated this pattern; Tennant had a chance to portray an entirely unique Time Lord, but Fourteen was more of a deliberate continuation of Ten. It seems that Sixteen and Rose may follow this trend as well.
If Billie Piper’s sixteenth portrayal of the Doctor leans towards a melancholic, socially withdrawn, and somewhat awkward character, similar to the First, Sixth, or Twelfth Doctors, or an entirely new concept like the Shalka Doctor, I would eagerly look forward to a full season of Doctor Who with her in charge. However, if the sixteenth Doctor shares more of Rose Tyler’s inner qualities than her outward appearance suggests, it might not be as captivating for the role of the new Doctor Who.
Doctor Who Feels Like It’s Repeating Itself
Doctor Who Has Gone A Bit Timey-Wimey
Billie Piper’s comeback to “Doctor Who” seems to follow a contemporary trend of reusing similar storylines. This pattern persists regardless of the length the Sixteenth Doctor stays, but it could become a more striking issue if Piper is indeed brought on board as a permanent Doctor.
From my perspective as an ardent fan, revisiting season 15 of Doctor Who, the Rani’s return evoked a sense of deja vu reminiscent of the Master’s comeback in season 3. Both characters were cunning Time Lord antagonists who had been hidden among us, only to unveil themselves, regenerate, and orchestrate darkened Earth scenarios that the Doctor ultimately managed to undo. In contrast, Omega seemed strikingly similar to Sutekh; a formidable CGI adversary summoned from the classic era, with subtle revisions and a few strategic retcons.
Billie Piper’s unveiling is strikingly similar to when Jodie Whittaker transformed into David Tennant, where the identity of the new Doctor was shrouded in mystery until it was revealed as a familiar face from Russell T Davies’ original run. After Tennant and now Piper, it seems like reality might subtly change and the Doctor could unexpectedly be Camille Coduri.
As a devoted fan of Doctor Who, I’d say it’s not far-fetched to suggest that having Piper step into the role of the Doctor for a while could make the characters of Sixteen and Fourteen seem more similar, and indeed, that observation would be spot on. However, I’d much rather see the Doctor Who universe explore this idea in a few special episodes over the next couple of years, rather than enduring three or four full seasons with Rose Tyler as the Doctor.
