Bijou Phillips’s close friend Kathy Hilton gives update on star’s health crisis amid desperate search for kidney donor

Bijou Phillips is staying positive while facing a serious health challenge with kidney disease, and she recently asked the public for help finding a donor.

According to her friend Kathy Hilton, 67, the 45-year-old actress is prioritizing being there for her 12-year-old daughter, Fianna, who is receiving treatment for a serious medical condition.

Kathy Hilton, mother of Paris and Nicky Hilton – who are close friends with Phillips – has described the difficult emotions Phillips is going through while battling her illness.

According to Hilton, Phillips was very scared and crying. Phillips is the daughter of the late singer Papa John Phillips and model Genevieve Waite.

According to Kathy, Phillips—an actress known for her roles in movies like Hostel 2, Bully, and Almost Famous—was scared that undergoing dialysis could be life-threatening.

Hilton explained that her husband, Richard Hilton, discussed the need for consistent medical checkups with Phillips, and had assisted her in receiving care at UCLA.

Kathy shared that he called her and urged her to follow the doctor’s advice, reminding her she had a young child. She reportedly agreed, saying, “You’re right, you’re right.”

Paris and Nicky Hilton are part of a close group of friends who have consistently supported Phillips during her hospital treatments, according to Hilton.

Hilton shared that Phillips is receiving support from a strong network of friends and family – including her sisters, singer Chynna Phillips and actress Mackenzie Phillips – while she deals with her health issues.

‘There are a lot of people that were there every minute with her,’ Hilton told the magazine.

Hilton reported that nearly 1,000 people have volunteered to be donors for Phillips, and she is incredibly thankful for the overwhelming support from the community.

Hilton was touched by the overwhelming support shown by everyone who offered their names to help Phillips during her illness.

It’s wonderful that so many people are willing to sign up and remain on the donor list, even knowing not everyone will be a perfect match. That group included a confidante for Nicky, who was not a match for the kidney but wanted to help.

‘She’s never met Bijou,’ Kathy said, ‘but she still wants to continue on the journey.’

In February, Phillips shared on Instagram that she was in the hospital and needed a kidney donor. This wasn’t the first time – she had a kidney transplant back in 2017 and now requires another one.

The actress explained that her first organ transplant allowed her to enjoy eight wonderful years as a mother, but she’s faced numerous health issues since, including a BK virus that caused her body to reject the transplant on two levels – both at the cellular and antibody levels.

‘I am currently under care of Dr Anjay Rastogi at UCLA and back on dialysis.’

What’s really kept me amazed by Bijou Phillips through everything she’s been going through is her strength for her daughter. It’s so heartbreaking knowing her ex-husband, Danny Masterson, is just starting a really long 30-year prison sentence after being convicted of rape. She’s a truly devoted mom, and I can only imagine how tough this whole situation is for her and her little one.

Phillips described how her life has changed since becoming a single mother. She feels a renewed sense of purpose and determination to be fully present for her daughter, recognizing she’s her daughter’s sole support system. It’s a responsibility she embraces after a period of feeling less driven.

Phillips and Masterson first met on Valentine’s Day in 2004 and became engaged in 2009. They married in 2011, but Phillips filed for divorce in September 2023 and began dating Jamie Mazur in 2024.
