Big Brother favourite Farmer Dave Graham drops major family news after becoming ‘donor dad’ to multiple kids – and reveals he was hospitalised from ‘burnout’
As I delve into the captivating narrative of David’s journey, I find myself deeply moved by his resilience and courage. His life experiences, marked by moments of triumph and struggle, are a testament to human spirit and tenacity. From his groundbreaking coming out on Big Brother, which sparked a much-needed conversation about sexual minorities in Australia, to his tireless work with at-risk youth, David’s story is one of inspiration and change.
Big Brother star David Graham has revealed his ‘unconventional’ family has expanded.
In my own words, I shared with Daily Mail Australia that my family has expanded to a delightful group of five. Known as “Farmer Dave” following my time on the popular reality show, this is an exciting new chapter in our lives.
David, aged 45, who publicly identified as gay during his time on Big Brother in 2006, is a sperm donor for the children he has with two close female friends, who are also well-known from the reality show.
Despite choosing not to disclose specifics about his children, the TV personality expressed the happiness that fathering through donation had brought into his life.
‘It has been the greatest reward of anything that I’ve ever done,’ he said.
‘There is nothing that comes close to holding your child and being part of the story of humanity.
As someone who stands firm in my identity, I recognize that my journey isn’t defined by failure. I understand that my story may conclude with me, and this seems to be part of the unique challenges faced by individuals like myself on their path through life.
In my world, I choose not to procreate, and given my agricultural upbringing, your purpose seems exclusively focused on carrying the torch forward.
David added that becoming a father had given him a sense of security and peace.
‘To hold my five children, it just makes me feel secure, it makes me feel connected,’ he said.
‘It makes me feel peace, and it makes me feel part of something.
This action seems to reinforce a sense of unity with the mothers, as if I’ve played a role in strengthening their connection to the ongoing thread of human existence.
He continued: ‘When I look in their eyes, I tell you what, I just see endless possibility and pure peace and joy.’
In a casual conversation, David disclosed that he had been admitted to the hospital due to exhaustion, which came as a result of his commitment to an organization aimed at helping troubled teenagers.
In 2019, the beloved character from the reality show launched a charity named RuffTrack. Its mission is to link up-in-risk youth aged 12 to 17 years old with dogs, with the goal of teaching them accountability and building trust.
Yet, David disclosed to Daily Mail Australia that he has now parted ways with the Sydney-based project he established.
He admitted that he became overwhelmed with the problem of at-risk youth across Australia.
David shared openly that he experienced a state of utter exhaustion, leading him to spend six weeks at the hospital.
‘I kind of gave everything to trying to save every f***ing kid.’
The dedicated young advisor and guide persisted in acknowledging that he was consistently putting in long hours to tackle an issue that only seemed to expand further.
He stated that children from various parts of Australia, including Alice Springs and numerous locations in New South Wales, were attending our program. The issues they faced were immense, he added.
As a devoted adherent, I found myself in a predicament, saying: “I must push through no matter what – laboring every day for seven straight days and exhausting all my energy. Five long years later, I hit a breaking point.
12 months after departing from RuffTrack, which continues to function, David confessed that he’s in a significantly improved situation now, and he’s currently guiding youth again, but this time it’s through the program known as the Cooee Crew.
He shared that he’s currently thriving and has resumed work with children who are considered extremely challenging cases, as they grow up within institutionalized care settings,” he explained.
The organization is known as the Cooee Crew, with ‘Cooee’ being an old Australian term that means “I’m here, where are you?”. Essentially, it signifies a welcoming presence saying, “I recognize you, I support you, let’s move forward together and achieve things.
David, a two-time participant in the Big Brother house (once in 2016 and again in 2022), expressed his eagerness for the upcoming 2025 revival of the groundbreaking reality show.
‘Too right, I’ll be tuning in,’ he said.
I believe that “Big Brother” offers an extraordinary insight into society, serving as a mirror to the core values and culture of Australia.
It’s been quite some time since the last airing of this particular show version, and I’m intrigued given the buzz surrounding discussions about Generation X and Generation Z. This upcoming episode seems to promise an exploration on: “what is our current societal state?
It truly depicts a diverse snapshot of Australia, raising the question about our collective progress.
‘I initially chose to participate in the show because it offers a glimpse into Australian homes. My main reason was to engage in meaningful dialogue and influence others’ perceptions about the community I identify with, which is the sexual minority group.’
David’s public disclosure about his identity was a significant turning point for Australian TV, but he confessed that he hadn’t anticipated it receiving this level of attention.
He expressed a desire for something to convey, “Here I am,” in a bushy manner, but nobody seemed to be doing it. So, he found himself thinking, “I guess someone has to take on this role, as no one else seems to be doing it. Alright, let me climb up there,” he said.
It took me by surprise just how large it turned out to be; I had assumed it would only make headlines for a short while.
17 years following his initial appearance on Big Brother, fans continue to express gratitude towards him for his candidness during the program.
17 years have passed, and still, I’m frequently approached on the street by individuals who express gratitude, saying, “You’ve made a significant difference in my life.” These encounters often involve parents, children, or siblings, and the sentiment is always the same: their lives were improved merely by recognizing that people who are gay are just like everyone else.
