Big Brother Australia winner reacts to huge twist in the reality show reboot

As a former reality TV personality myself, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement as I learn about the changes coming to Big Brother Australia. Having spent my own days under the watchful eye of the Big Brother camera, I can appreciate the transformative potential that this 24/7 livestream format brings to the table.

Previously known Big Brother Australia contestant, Benjamin Norris, has voiced his opinions regarding significant modifications planned for the series in preparation for its eagerly awaited 2025 comeback.

In this upcoming season, a fresh group of residents will be broadcasted around the clock, as the show makes its return with a new host, Mel Tracina, stepping up to replace Sonia Kruger.

On Saturday at the ACRA Awards in Sydney, Mel shared with Daily Mail Australia that significant modifications are planned for the relaunch of the reality TV show.

She mentioned that viewers can now watch the game live since a new streaming feature is being added, eliminating any editing worries for the competitors.

She mentioned that there’s no need to be anxious about receiving a poor edit or being portrayed as the ‘villain of the season’, since viewers have the freedom to tune in whenever they want and catch a glimpse of what the housemates are doing at any given moment.

2012 “Big Brother” champion, Benjamin, shares his thoughts on the major modifications and how they might alter the traditional format of the cherished television series.

‘I think the 24/7 element changes this show,’ Benjamin told Yahoo Lifestyle.

I concur with Mel Tracina’s perspective; this approach is likely to significantly alter how Australians perceive each housemate, making it challenging for anyone to criticize their portrayal. What a nice change of pace!

He said he believes the 24/7 format will take the popular reality TV show back to how it was originally imagined back in the 00s.

As a devoted admirer, I’d express it this way: “Initially, the concept of this program was designed as an intriguing social exploration, where ordinary individuals are under the spotlight of the nation, with the power to decide who continues and who departs.

The initial concept was brilliant, and I firmly believe that the success of this series wouldn’t be possible without Australia’s involvement.

In the early 2000s, the reality TV show known as “Big Brother,” where contestants share a house and vie to remain there for a chance at prize money, debuted on Channel Ten in Australia.

After that, the program switched networks multiple times; it initially moved to Channel Nine, and later, a redesigned version was broadcasted on Channel Seven.

Instead, it should be noted that Big Brother Australia was removed from Seven’s 2024 lineup following the poorest-rated season in its history.

1 Week into its premiere, the airing time of the show was shifted to a later hour. In the end, it aired its 15th season with only 152,000 overnight viewers in the five major cities – a significant decrease compared to when it restarted in 2020 with 853,000 viewers.

Last season’s rebranding attempt failed to excite viewers as it primarily aimed at promoting romantic relationships between the attractive, single cast members.

Many found the latest season bore a resemblance to the reality show Love Island rather than Big Brother, with one individual expressing their discontent on social media: “Let’s go back to featuring ordinary people on this platform. I don’t see why I should vote for any of these contestants!

‘So sad to see what was once a great show absolutely ruined,’ another lamented.

It is anticipated that the reintroduction of the show in Australia could lead to strong audience ratings similar to those achieved through live streaming in the United States and United Kingdom.

8.3 billion minutes were collectively spent by viewers watching the U.S. version of the show on CBS, and also tuning in to its 24/7 live stream on Paramount+.

In 2022, it reached a level comparable to blockbuster streaming shows such as Bridgerton, Stranger Things, and the Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon in terms of popularity, for the reality TV series that has been on air for a while.

The Aussie reboot will also be given a fresh as new host Mel Tracina is taking the reins.

She informed Daily Mail that she discovered she had been offered the job quite promptly, prior to any official announcement.

‘I grew up watching it. When it came out in 2001, I was there.’

Before taking on this new role, she had already gained recognition as a ‘culture correspondent’ for Ten’s comedic discussion show, The Cheap Seats.

For me, this is absolutely massive. Moreover, it seems to be a runaway success among viewers, and it’s clearly an unstoppable TV phenomenon.

‘It means so much to so many Australians, so I feel the pressure of doing the best job that I can.’

One of the unique aspects of “Big Brother” is its reputation as a reality TV contest where events unfold live while being broadcast, and also provides viewers with an uncensored perspective on the happenings within the house.

Through live broadcasts, viewers can experience the game’s progression organically, without being limited by predetermined narratives or edited sequences prepared by the production team.

During the height of Big Brother’s success, it consistently attracted approximately 1.4 million viewers per episode and served as a cornerstone program on Channel Ten for eight consecutive seasons.

By sticking to the original, classic format that made Channel Ten popular in the past, they are considering using ordinary Australians once again, which may help bring the series back to its former greatness.

A significant number of viewers of reality TV series are tuning out programs they perceive as excessively scripted, or those primarily featuring social media personalities.

The new show “Made in Bondi” encountered criticism when it was disclosed that none of its Australian actors originated from or grew up in the famous district, and the properties depicted were actually rentals.

Meanwhile, the Block fans panned the 20th anniversary season as fake and ‘scripted’.
