Bianca Balti: How Cancer Made Me Embrace My True Power Beyond Beauty Standards
Bianca Balti shared that her hair loss from cancer treatment transformed her, allowing her to break free from traditional beauty norms.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I can share my admiration for a woman who, at the age of 40, bravely decided to embrace a new look by shaving her head. Facing chemotherapy in October, she took it upon herself to regain control over her situation, transforming this challenging period into an empowering personal statement.
Last year, Bianca was diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer following a visit to the emergency room due to abdominal discomfort. This stage indicated that the cancer had advanced beyond her pelvis.
I’ve been over the moon since I conquered my chemo battle on the 27th of January, and it seems like the universe is rewarding me with a whirlwind of excitement! This very same month, I found myself immersed in the magical tunes of the Sanremo music festival in Italy, feeling the rhythm pulse through me. And just when I thought my luck couldn’t get any better, I was granted an invitation to the star-studded Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Los Angeles! What a month it has been, filled with music and glamour – a dream come true for this dedicated fan!
In an interview with The Times, Bianca shared that losing her hair in a sense empowered her, as she no longer felt the need to compete based on attractiveness or glamour. This loss removed many obstacles for her, leaving her without anything to prove.
Occasionally, I’d gaze into the mirror and notice my hair was gone, along with my eyebrows and eyelashes. It became overwhelming at times, yet I believe I’ve managed to transform that experience into something inspiring.

Speaking as a lifestyle enthusiast, over the past month, I’ve found myself battling for my well-being. Yet, when it comes to stepping onto that glittering red carpet, fear doesn’t even cross my mind.
Bianca shared a health update in a touching Instagram post to mark World Cancer Day on February 4.
4th February, marked as World Cancer Day. For years, this date seemed to pass by without much significance in my life, merely a casual mention in social media posts. However, today, I find myself reflecting upon its true meaning and importance.
Despite the fact that my aunt passed away from metastatic breast cancer at 39, and my mother was diagnosed with myeloma a few years back, I continue to maintain a positive outlook on life.
Even with my diagnosis from 2021 that I have the BRCA1 gene, I opted for a proactive double mastectomy in December 2022.
Until the 8th of September, 2024, cancer, specifically ovarian, was not occupying my thoughts or body. However, on that day, it seemed like a grim prognosis had arrived in my life.
On October 14th, I embarked on a chemotherapy journey which concluded last Monday, January 27th. However, unexpectedly, during these past few months, I’ve felt more alive than ever.
I no longer took my life for granted and my gratitude reached an unprecedented level. Every experience began to feel like a genuine blessing.

Bianca added: “It’s been tough, and it’s not completely done yet, but I wouldn’t want it any different.
People often say, “Experiences that don’t destroy you make you stronger,” but for me, those experiences have deepened my affection for life significantly.
In September 2024, Bianca disclosed that she was diagnosed with cancer following a hospital admission due to severe abdominal discomfort.
On September 15, she shared the heartbreaking news about her diagnosis in an Instagram post. In that post, she confessed that the previous week was filled with anxiety, discomfort, and tears.
Even while draped in a hospital gown, the model persisted with her smile, expressing her determination to stay optimistic and confident about overcoming cancer.
She shared that receiving a diagnosis with a 39% five-year survival rate has enabled her to discover the ‘beauty in overcoming life’s obstacles.’
Based on information from the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, a diagnosis of Stage 3C ovarian cancer indicates that the cancer is located within one or both fallopian tubes and has metastasized to organs beyond the pelvis.
It may have also spread to the lymph nodes, liver or spleen.
Treatment for this aggressive form of cancer includes surgery and chemotherapy.

2022 saw Bianca get genetically tested due to her recurring health issues, revealing that she carried the BRCA1 gene, often associated with individuals who develop breast or ovarian cancer.
In addition to finding out she was a carrier, Bianca also understood that she had a one in two possibility of getting diagnosed with breast cancer and a likelihood of one in three for an ovarian cancer diagnosis.
By December 2022, she underwent a preventative double mastectomy.
At that point, she shared with Vogue: “I wasn’t ill at the moment, but I understood that my likelihood of becoming unwell increased significantly. Now, I had the freedom to take action.
The most challenging aspect of this whole ordeal has been dealing with the fear – the anxiety about receiving a diagnosis, the uncertainty, the concern over having to take time away from work, and the apprehension about how my physical appearance might change.
Bianca has a 17-year-old daughter named Matilde, who she co-parents with her former spouse Christian Lucidi. They were married between the years 2006 and 2010.
After separating from her previous partner, Bianca got married to Matthew McRae in the year 2016. Together they have a nine-year-old daughter named Mia.
