This paper, ‘AI Phenomenology for Understanding Human-AI Experiences Across Eras’, proposes a methodological framework-AI phenomenology-that prioritizes understanding how AI systems are experienced, rather than solely assessing their performance. By tracing a lineage from phenomenology to postphenomenology and Actor-Network Theory, we present replicable toolkits-including instruments for longitudinal data capture and design concepts like translucent design-to investigate the evolving, temporal nature of human-AI alignment. As AI systems and the humans who co-evolve with them become ever more integrated, can a focus on lived experience unlock more robust and ethically grounded approaches to AI design and evaluation?
