Beyond Paradise’s season 3 finale was almost perfect, but should follow Death in Paradise in one key way
In the previous season, the series “Beyond Paradise” demonstrated that it didn’t rely on the romantic tension between Martha (Sally Bretton) and Humphrey (Kris Marshall) – often referred to as ‘Will They/Won’t They’ – to produce a truly remarkable finale episode.
Following the intense climax of season one where Martha traveled to Saint Marie to be with Humphrey (a memorable event that culminated their reunion), the spin-off titled “Death in Paradise” disrupted their wedding plans, resulting in a uniquely romantic non-ceremony. Now, the spin-off series “Beyond Paradise” has once more outdone itself, with season three’s near-flawless conclusion.
After an emotional finale in season one (where Martha went to Saint Marie to meet Humphrey), the spin-off show “Death in Paradise” prevented their wedding from happening, resulting in a very romantic event that wasn’t a ceremony. Now, the spin-off series “Beyond Paradise” has done it again, with a nearly perfect ending in season three.
In the final installment, the beloved character Josh Woods, played by Chris Jenks, experienced a tumultuous series of emotions as his girlfriend was taken captive.

The program took things to another level by introducing a nail-biting moment involving Esther (Zahra Ahmadi) and Archie (Jamie Bamber). Though they had initially chosen to explore their relationship, at the last possible second, Esther hesitated, struggling to move forward due to her inner turmoil about beginning a new romantic involvement.
1. At the end of the episode, their interaction seemed to evoke a lingering sense of sadness, fittingly so for Esther’s unique experiences throughout the season. Over the course of the season, Esther and Archie’s bond had softened her, reducing her initial apprehension about pursuing romance.
2. The way they interacted in the final scene left a lasting sense of melancholy, which made sense considering Esther’s personal growth arc over the season. Throughout the season, Esther’s relationship with Archie had softened her heart and reduced her fear of becoming involved in a romantic relationship.
3. The closing interaction between them stirred up a lingering sadness that was fitting for Esther’s character development throughout the season. Over the course of the show, Esther’s bond with Archie had allowed her to let down her guard and overcome her initial reluctance to engage in romance.
4. The way they parted at the episode’s end evoked a lingering feeling of sadness that was fitting for the transformation Esther went through during the season. As the season progressed, Esther’s relationship with Archie had helped her open up and become less hesitant about pursuing romance.

7. The way they parted at the conclusion of the episode stirred up a lingering sense of sadness that was appropriate for Esther’s emotional journey over the course of the season. Watching her stand at the edge, ready to take the leap into love, yet suddenly flee instead, created an intriguing cliffhanger that left spectators eager for more.
Nevertheless, the saddest instance arose when Martha, Humphrey, and Rosie (Blue Stevenson’s characters) experienced something.
OR
But it was Martha, Humphrey, and Rosie (the characters of Bella Rei Blue Stevenson) who had the most heart-wrenching event occur to them.
Martha and Humphrey received a startling piece of information that they needed to bid farewell to their foster child, Rosie. Rosie, who had grown fond of them as well, felt disturbed by this unexpected turn of events.
Via the narrative in “Beyond Paradise”, we delved into yet another intricate aspect of foster care, as Rosie confessed to experiencing feelings of joy and sorrow upon parting from the duo to reunite with her mom.
Humphrey shattered as he admitted that he hadn’t anticipated her causing him this much pain, and his sorrow was striking given his usual cheerful, sunny disposition – a contrast that left a strong impression. Similarly, Martha’s emotions resonated deeply.
Humphrey crumbled when he shared that he wasn’t prepared for her causing him such pain, and the stark contrast between his typical optimism and his sadness made a powerful impact. The same was true for Martha’s feelings.
While I found the finale incredibly moving and superbly executed, I believe the impact could have been even greater if the show had adopted a similar structure to “Death in Paradise,” stretching across eight episodes rather than six. This would have allowed for a more immersive and engaging storytelling experience.
The bond among Martha, Humphrey, and Rosie mirrors this perfectly. Expanding their foster care journey into a more extended narrative could have made it even more impactful.
Key developmental stages, like Rosie growing fond of Humphrey’s peculiarities and their relationship deepening, seemed to be glossed over, making them feel hasty.
Bretton and Marshall are so convincingly portrayed, having inhabited these roles for such a duration, that it effectively smoothed over some of the pacing issues. Yet, the scene where Rosie departed would have evoked a stronger emotional response if the audience had been privy to their journey’s progression on a deeper level.
It would have been delightful if Esther and Archie had more opportunities to casually spend time together, as portrayed in Beyond Paradise. The show effectively built tension due to Esther’s hesitancy, but there was insufficient screen time dedicated to showcasing their blossoming romance.
If “Kelby’s” spin-off series had followed the same number of episodes as the main show, it might have allowed for a more substantial character development through a richer storyline. Sadly, this is not something we’ll ever get to see.
Even though some fans might be disappointed, the final episode of “Beyond Paradise” in its third season was undeniably the show’s finest. Not only did it delve deeper into Martha and Humphrey’s relationship, but it also gave secondary characters an opportunity to shine significantly, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating a potential fourth season.
As a devoted admirer, I eagerly anticipate that the greenlight signals a more extensive journey ahead, allowing me to delve deeper into the captivating lives of Shipton Abbott’s most remarkable residents.
Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
