Kris Marshall, known for Beyond Paradise, has commended Vincent Franklin’s performance as the antagonist in the latest season of Happy Valley. Franklin’s character is expected to create significant conflict for Marshall’s detective, Humphrey Goodman, in the new series.
A new trailer for the next season of the Death in Paradise spin-off reveals Franklin telling Humphrey he needs to cut staff at the Shipton Abbot police station, forcing him to fire one of his team members.
Marshall hinted that Vincent Franklin will play a challenging, authoritative character who clashes with Humphrey this season. He described Franklin as a kind of rival in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy.

He continued, explaining that the other man skillfully uses excessive flattery, which puts a lot of pressure on Humphrey. This behavior, combined with the fact that he’s not a very likable person, is causing Humphrey problems.
Marshall hinted at the challenges Humphrey will face this season, explaining that Humphrey’s character presents an interesting contrast: he’s a police officer, which means he’s part of a strict, hierarchical system, but he also consistently operates as an outsider who doesn’t quite fit in.
What to Read Next
Humphrey resists being told what to do and struggles with self-discipline. He’s disorganized and easily distracted, which makes him strongly dislike any kind of authority and struggle to work within structured systems. This likely explains why he thrives in smaller, more chaotic environments – like isolated, under-resourced police stations in rural areas – where he can operate independently without pressure from superiors or subordinates.
Now that the stakes are higher, he struggles to cope when someone in power comes looking for him.
The fourth season of Beyond Paradise will premiere on Friday, March 27th at 8pm, immediately following the last episode of Death in Paradise season 15. You can watch Beyond Paradise, Death in Paradise, and Return to Paradise on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
