Beyond Paradise star responds to health issues that cause “fear” for Martha and what it means

In a candid discussion, Sally Bretton from the show “Beyond Paradise” has shared details about the upcoming health-related plotline in season three that promises to create turmoil for her character.

In the newest installment of the “Death in Paradise” spin-off, Martha’s mother Anne (played by Barbara Flynn) encounters some health complications. This development is expected to significantly shape Bretton’s character.

In conversation with Digital Spy, Bretton expressed, “When we began the series, Martha’s father had passed away not long before, and this storyline seems to resurface all those past memories. It appears to rekindle some of that lingering grief, particularly for Anne.

She proceeded to disclose Martha’s concerns regarding Anne’s hardship, revealing that the news of Martha’s mother’s health issue will likely cause genuine anxiety in Martha.

Bretton explained, easing Martha’s feelings of doubt and apprehension, “You’re standing on the brink of an entirely new realm.” He went on to say, “With your last living parent about to depart, it’s as if you’re questioning where you are, where solid ground lies. This uncertainty stirs up memories of the past.

Flynn hinted at the impact this season might have on Anne, since her daughter’s business has recently relocated and she is embarking on a new venture aimed at expanding her family. Therefore, Anne may choose to minimize the situation.

Flynn explained, “A sense of distance might develop in their relationship this season. They’ve always been incredibly close, mother and child, but now there’s a new phase in their relationship due to the circumstances. It can be awkward at times, yet intriguing, to observe this subtle distancing unfold.

Flynn suggested that a fresh relationship may be blossoming between Anne and actress Zahra Ahmadi’s on-screen daughter, Melina Sinadinou’s character, Zoe. This is quite endearing as it seems to include Zoe as Anne’s quasi granddaughter through the storyline.

This is a beautiful bond between a grandmother and her granddaughter, with the age gap. It’s truly heartwarming.”

“The relationship they share, grandmother and granddaughter, due to their age difference, is quite special and heartwarming.

She went on to say: “What makes this series remarkable is its ability to depict everyday struggles and issues we all face, and do so with a reassuring and compassionate tone. This allows viewers of all ages, who are all portrayed within the show, to discuss it openly.

“I think people feel safe watching the series, and enjoy it.”

Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
