‘Beyonce robbed our dance move!’: claims 90s British boyband 911 as they reveal they TAUGHT the global superstar her signature booty shake
As I delve into the captivating narrative of these iconic bands from the ’90s and early 2000s, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for an era that was all about glitz, glamour, and the raw energy of youth. The story of 911, in particular, resonates deeply with me, as they seem to have embodied the very essence of the pop music scene during those vibrant years.
Thousands of dance classes worldwide have been established, each drawing inspiration from the distinctive dancing style of Beyoncé.
It has recently been suggested that the dance move for which she is best known, often referred to as her iconic booty shake, might have originated from an unexpected and rather surprising source.
911, a boy band from the ’90s who appeared on a BBC documentary titled “Boybands Forever”, asserted that they were the ones who initially showed Beyoncé the specific dance move.
The band, consisting of Lee Brennan, Jimmy Constable, and Simon ‘Spike’ Dawbarn, was established in 1995. Over a span of five years, they managed to achieve ten top 10 hits on the UK charts before disbanding.
In a memorable performance of their 1997 chart-topper “Bodyshakin'”, they captivated audiences as they vigorously moved their bodies on stage. Notably, Spike shared that Beyoncé found the act mesmerizing and was deeply impressed by it.
He explained: ‘There’s something about that move… we did a TV show with Destiny’s Child. We performed and we did Bodyshakin’ and Beyonce was like “show us that move! Keep doing it”.’
Spike added, “Jimmy and I were simply standing there, performing the move since if Beyoncé requested it, we’d do it!
When you see Beyoncé dancing her signature moves, it makes me think, “Wow, they took our dance style!” We originated that style first!
It’s not the first time Beyonce has been accused of stealing dance moves.
In 2011, Belgian dancer-choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker alleged that the singer borrowed several of her dance moves for the music video of her song “Countdown.
In a recent conversation with a Danish blog, I shared that I wasn’t granted approval by Beyoncé’s music label to utilize her original composition in my work. As a lifestyle expert, I always emphasize the importance of respecting intellectual property rights and obtaining proper authorization before using someone else’s creative output.
‘I didn’t know anything about this. I’m not mad, but this is plagiarism,’ she said.
Regarding the source of inspiration for the song “Bodyshakin'”, John McLaughlin shared his thoughts during a BBC interview: ‘Spike and Jimmy were incredible performers. What they did wasn’t just dancing; it was more like acrobatics…’
“I thought, alright, let’s create a song with a clear theme for them. We aimed for it to have a danceable rhythm and a catchy melody that would easily lodge itself in people’s minds.
‘When Bodyshakin’ came, I thought ah that’s it!’
TopMob has contacted Beyonce’s representatives for comment.
90s and 00s Bands Unveiled: A Darker Side, as Lee confessed that his tenure with 911 was a tumultuous journey involving endless flights, hotels, performances, and press engagements.
He admitted that he was exhausted and had no time for contemplation, then went on to explain that dealing with fan attention was challenging for him.
In 2010, the group disbanded, and it fell upon Jimmy to share this news during a live broadcast on The Chris Moyles Show, which airs on BBC Radio 1 in 2000.
In a 2005 interview with The Guardian, Jimmy expressed that the situation left him unprepared and taken aback, saying “There was no opportunity for me to process it properly.
‘I had a lump in my throat saying it, then we came out of Radio 1 and the other two guys went to the pub. I got in my car and took off and I never saw them for two years.’
Following their breakup, Jimmy found solace in alcohol and drugs, embarking on a struggle with addiction that ultimately resulted in his being featured on The Jeremy Kyle Show in 2013.
After their split, 911 have reunited for several gigs in recent years.
Last year, the team joined forces with Vietnamese artist Duc Phuc to create a dual-language rendition of “I Do,” a song that blends English and Vietnamese. This collaboration soared to the top spot on Vietnam’s Billboard Top 100 chart.
They had several top 10 hits including Bodyshakin, Private Number and All I Want Is You.
