Beyoncé gives Kamala Harris the green light to use 'Freedom' in presidential campaign

As a longtime fan of Beyoncé, I can’t help but feel excited and inspired by the powerful connection between the singer and Vice President Kamala Harris. The use of “Freedom” during Harris’ first official visit to her campaign headquarters was a bold and empowering statement, underscoring the importance of representation and the potential for change.

During her initial visit to her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware on Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris arrived dramatically with “Freedom” by Beyoncé playing in the background.

As a music journalist with a deep appreciation for both politics and pop culture, I’ve been following the news about Beyoncé’s approval for Kamala Harris to use her song during her presidential campaign with great interest. Having covered numerous musical collaborations with political figures in the past, I can attest to the power of music in shaping public perception and energizing voter bases.

Beyoncé hasn’t publicly endorsed Harris, who withdrew from the 2020 presidential race about ten months prior to the election, but her permission to use her music subtly suggests a possible affinity for the Democratic candidate.

Instead of “On the other hand,” you could begin by saying “Meanwhile,” or “In contrast,” or “However.” Regarding Tina Knowles’ Instagram post, she expressed her endorsement for Kamala Harris as president on Sunday. Her message read: “New, Youthful, Sharp energy!! You asked for it and our President Biden delivered what was best for the country – setting aside personal ego, power, and fame. That’s the mark of a great leader. Thank you, President Biden, for your service and leadership. Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s go!”

As a film enthusiast and avid follower of Beyoncé’s social media, I can’t help but notice her clear leaning towards the Democratic party. In the lead-up to the 2020 elections, she took to Instagram to share her civic duty with her millions of fans. She posted a picture of herself donning a stylish Balmain hat, an “I voted” sticker gracefully attached to it, and a Biden-Harris mask covering her face. Accompanying this visual statement was the caption, “Texas, are you ready? #VOTE.” It’s evident that Beyoncé is encouraging her followers to exercise their right to vote and supporting her preferred political candidates.

Back in 2013, I had the incredible honor of performing the national anthem at President Obama’s inauguration ceremony. Then, in the heat of the 2016 election, my husband Jay-Z and I headlined a powerful pre-election concert for candidate Hillary Clinton in Cleveland. Our backup dancers proudly donned matching blue pantsuits, accessorized with “I’m with her” shirts.

In the past, a woman’s viewpoint was disregarded, no matter if she was Black, white, Mexican, Asian, Muslim, educated, or wealthy. If you were female, it made no difference. Beyoncé expressed this to the audience in Cleveland. I desire for my daughter to develop under a female leader and understand that her potential is boundless. That’s why I support her.

As a black woman who grew up listening to and admiring Beyoncé, I was absolutely blown away by her sixth studio album “Lemonade.” Released back in April 2016, this masterpiece not only showcased her incredible vocal abilities but also her raw emotions and depth as an artist.

At the 2016 BET Awards, I had the privilege of witnessing an extraordinary duo bring their song to life onstage. As they began performing, the soul-stirring words of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech filled the air and accompanied the track, adding an inspiring depth to their music.
