Bette Midler shares heartbreaking clip of family singing hymn in ruins of home they lost to LA fires

Bette Midler posted a touching video showing a family harmonizing a spiritual song amidst the remains of their residence that had stood for 37 years, sadly reduced to ashes by the wildfires in Los Angeles.

Starting from next Tuesday, the region encountered some of its most intense windstorms in more than ten years, triggering fires that have razed countless buildings and resulted in at least 11 fatalities throughout the week.

Approximately 130,000 individuals received evacuation notices or advisories, with search teams deploying specially trained dogs capable of locating human remains among the debris.

For close to forty years, the Halpin family called their home in Altadena, California, their own. However, unfortunately, this residence was ultimately engulfed by the persistent Eaton Fire.

In a chilling video shared widely on the internet, people revisited the charred remnants of an old structure, forming a semi-circle to croon Regina Caeli – an ancient hymn in Latin honoring the Virgin Mary from medieval times.

Upon returning to what was left of their home, the Halpin family discovered that the only item still standing was a statue of the Virgin Mary, and this is what they informed KTLA5 about.

The lyrics of the hymn, which the Halpins sang in its original Latin, can be interpreted as: ‘Rejoice, Queen of Heaven, praise be to you! For the one you conceived with holiness has risen, as he had foretold, praise be to you! Intercede for us to God, praise be to you!’

In the spirit of sharing heartwarming moments, I recently came across a video of the Halpin family singing. Moved by their strength amidst the Eaton Fire, I felt compelled to spread their story on Instagram, using the hashtags #eaton and #losangeles as a testament to their courage within the Los Angeles community.

As a devoted follower, I entrusted my sorrows to Christ and His beloved mother. After uttering a pledge to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I joined in song. -Andrew Halpin (one member of our family)

Marie Clare Metcalfe, his sister, mentioned that faith has served as the bedrock of our family throughout history, and it will remain so as we journey through future challenges together.

She shared that the dilapidated structure depicted in the widely-shared video serves as their ancestral home, where currently reside 14 grandchildren, along with their family.

Alongside Andrew and Marie Claire, Gianna, their sister, and her two-year-old daughter too suffered devastating losses in the fire because they resided at their grandparents’ detached house.

On Saturday afternoon, the family set up a GoFundMe campaign following a house fire, and by midday, they had amassed more than $97,000 – exceeding their initial target of $90,000.

In the video where the Halpins sing the hymn, a statue of the Virgin Mary is visible within the semi-circle they’ve created.

In simpler terms, she expressed her deep sadness and sympathy to everyone affected by the recent, unprecedented wildfires over the past few days. They’ve lost their belongings and face an arduous task of rebuilding, and she feels deeply moved and sorrowful for us all.

The Beaches star, affectionately called The Divine Miss M, expressed a heartfelt hope that our cherished city thrives continually.
