Bethenny Frankel slams ‘California sober’ people who quit alcohol but ‘wanna smoke pot’ and do cocaine
Bethenny Frankel criticizes the modern approach known as “California sober,” where individuals stop drinking alcohol but continue using substances such as marijuana and cocaine.
2021 saw the term “California Sober” gain popularity, as Demi Lovato utilized it during a conversation with Joe Rogan to convey that she had given up alcohol and other hard substances, yet continued to use cannabis.
Demi, who experienced a nearly lethal heroin overdose in 2018, subsequently disavowed the term and asserted that ‘abstinence from any substance is the best choice.’
In the latest edition of her podcast, Just B, Bethenny has playfully criticized individuals who casually express a desire for cocaine without any intention of drinking alcohol.
The 54-year-old celebrity from the reality TV world, known for her wine brand named Forever Young, pre-mixed cocktail line called Skinnygirl, and investments in Mingle Mocktails, mentioned that she personally hasn’t consumed any alcohol for a while.
She mentioned that she is suffering from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a neurological disorder which increases her heart rate significantly when moving from lying down to sitting or standing, especially during warm weather conditions.
Some individuals are choosing abstinence, a practice known as ‘California Sober.’ Now, they’re opting for cannabis edibles and smoking marijuana,” Bethenny explained.
She continued, “To put it simply, ‘I’d rather have a bag of cocaine than consume alcohol.’
In simpler terms, Bethenny shared that she associates with individuals who engage in unconventional or extreme activities, as if they were suggesting something like, “Let’s try heroin, get a facial mask, and drink water” – and she was not joking about it.
She shared that it’s been quite some time since she last consumed alcohol. She has Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which causes her to become extremely dehydrated very quickly. She used the analogy of a Shishito pepper to illustrate this condition, suggesting that it’s similar to how quickly the water inside a Shishito pepper evaporates when exposed to air.
Approximately every 10-20 occasions when I consume alcohol, it has a severely harmful impact on me. I can become extremely ill, dehydrated, and may even require intravenous fluids. Unfortunately, this reaction doesn’t seem to work well for me.
Yet, she admitted that abstaining from alcohol brought up queries concerning how to manage circumstances such as social drinking or dating.
She mentioned that socializing through dating can be quite significant and challenging, especially when it involves abstaining from alcohol. However, she pointed out that in recent times, there are numerous non-alcoholic alternatives available. Yet, she questioned whether these options might seem unusual or make one feel uneasy. She also brought up the existence of sober bars as an alternative option for those choosing not to drink.
It requires a sort of push or breakthrough, if you will. You need to overcome this barrier. It’s somewhat similar to embarking on a juice cleanse, where, over time, you gradually feel more vibrant, lighter, and your eyes seem clearer, sleep improves too.
She acknowledged that giving up alcohol may make you slightly more reserved in social situations. Indeed, it’s true. Without alcohol, you won’t find yourself staying out as late or participating in reckless activities.
Bethenny noted that sobriety might somewhat shape your character a bit, especially if you’re not an alcoholic but simply someone with the choice to abstain.
Yesterday, she remembered that she had been sampling non-alcoholic wines, which she found disappointing. Inadvertently, she took a sip of an alcoholic wine without realizing it, but assuredly, it wouldn’t lead to her demise. She also added that, while excessive drinking could be harmful for a true alcoholic, their situation was not about to spiral out of control into a binge-drinking episode.
On New Year’s Eve, Bethenny, who is currently dating businessman Tom Villante, mentioned that they had a date together. She added that abstaining from alcohol that night was quite an accomplishment for them.
She noted that it was necessary to prepare in advance, such as deciding: “What beverage will we choose? What’s our preferred cocktail? What kind of mood do we want to set?” since you might be standing around for several hours and the question then becomes: “What are our plans? What activity should we engage in?
Initially, Bethenny was spotted with Tom in September; however, it wasn’t until a Yellowstone premiere in November that they made their relationship official on the red carpet.
Her striking new partner holds the position as CEO at YapStone, a company specialized in payment processing, catering specifically to individuals managing vacation rentals.
