Lovers of true crime narratives, avid readers, and enthusiasts of mystery series are sure to discover captivating content in “Listen for the Lie,” the newest book that’s now adapted for television viewing.
The studio revealed on Sunday at the L.A. Times Festival of Books that they plan to transform the thriller novel into a drama series with the same title, Universal.
Amy Tintera’s top-selling book, released in March, centers around the character Lucy as she endeavors to unravel the mystery behind her friend Savvy’s murder, with Lucy herself being the main suspect. The television adaptation, penned by Rachel Shukert (“Nine Perfect Strangers,” “The Baby-Sitters Club”) and overseen by Tintera, Shukert, and Dinner Party Productions’ Sue Naegle and Ali Krug (“Pam & Tommy”), is currently being developed at UCP, a branch of Universal Studio Group.

Books
Over recent times, shifts in television, movie production, and book publishing – notably the impact of the pandemic – have sparked an upsurge in book-to-screen adaptations. Here’s a rundown of what’s on the horizon.
At the outset of the book, it’s been five years since Lucy was discovered on the streets, drenched in her friend Savannah’s (Savvy) blood following her brutal murder. In an attempt to leave her past behind and start fresh, Lucy relocated to Los Angeles. However, her tranquil existence is disrupted when a popular true crime podcast host decides to delve into the details of Savvy’s death in his upcoming episode, compelling Lucy to return to her old hometown in Texas.
Universal Studio Group’s Executive Vice President of Creative Acquisitions and IP Management, Tintera, Naegle, Shukert, and Jordan Moblo, unveiled the new project during a panel discussion at the L.A. Times Festival of Books. The group participated in a conversation with Matt Brennan from The Times about transforming books into TV series, titled “Innovative Strategies for a Television Series Based on Books.
