Super Sentai is the most well-known type of Tokusatsu, which are Japanese live-action shows and movies famous for their special effects. While Tokusatsu often includes fantasy, horror, or science fiction, Super Sentai specifically focuses on superhero teams.

Super Sentai shows usually follow a team of three to six young people who are trained in martial arts and given special weapons. They’re chosen to protect people, and their powers can come from magic, technology, or even helpful aliens. No matter the source, these heroes are always known by their bright, color-coordinated outfits.

The original Super Sentai series, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, debuted in 1975, but it took a few years for the show to find its now-familiar format. Surprisingly, a collaboration between Toei and Marvel Comics played a role in this development, even though their joint productions aren’t officially part of the Super Sentai franchise. Toei’s 1978 live-action Spider-Man series was the first to feature superheroes controlling giant robots – an idea that would become a key part of what makes Super Sentai unique.

Best Super Sentai Series as of November 2025

As of November 2025, Toei has created 49 seasons of the Super Sentai Series. Although other companies have made similar shows, only Toei officially uses the “Super Sentai Series” name. Despite this, choosing the best seasons is challenging. Here’s a list of seasons, presented in order from the earliest to the most recent.

Choujin Sentai Jetman (1991)

It’s 199X, and the world relies on Sky Force to defend against strange and dangerous threats. Sky Force scientists created Birdonic Waves, a technology that could give people incredible powers. However, the terrorist group Vyram attacked during the first attempt to create a team of five super-powered heroes. Only one soldier, Ryu Tendo, was successfully given these abilities.

When Sky Force’s headquarters was destroyed, fragments of the Birdonic Waves were spread around the world, each touching a different person. Now, Ryu and his commander, Aya Odagiri, are in a desperate search to find these individuals. Once found, they will join forces as the Jetmen, a powerful team determined to defeat Vyran.

Choujin Sentai Jetman was inspired by the anime Science Ninja Team Gatchaman and is significant for a couple of reasons. It was the last Super Sentai series, until Ressha Sentai ToQger in 2014, that wasn’t turned into a Power Rangers show. Also, it was the first Super Sentai series not connected to Power Rangers to be released on video in North America.

Chōjin Sentai Jetman stood out in the Super Sentai series by tackling more grown-up themes. It featured complex romantic relationships and gave the heroes sad and difficult pasts. Gosei Sentai Dairanger (1993)

Around 8,000 years ago, three tribes in southern China joined together to create the Daos Empire. This empire thrived for a time, but then the aggressive Gorma tribe began a campaign to conquer all the other tribes and eventually, the world. For 5,000 years, the Gorma and Dai tribes were locked in conflict, and ultimately, only the Shura tribe remained, becoming the ancestors of modern humans.

The Gorma are back, but Earth has a new defense. Long ago, the Dai discovered a way to harness life energy – called qi – and become powerful animal warriors. Now, with the help of the enigmatic Master Kaku, five young people are learning these skills to become the Dai-Rangers and protect the world.

Many North American viewers might recognize Gosei Sentai Dairanger, which was released internationally as Star Rangers. Its fight scenes were used in the second season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It was also one of the first Super Sentai series to become available on video in North America, released in 2015, and is currently available to stream for free on Tubi TV.

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (2009)

For centuries, a secret battle has been fought between humans and powerful, evil spirits called Gedoushu. To protect everyone, the Emperor of Japan selected five samurai clans – the Shinkengers – to be the first line of defense. These warriors mastered both sword fighting and elemental magic, and have passed these skills down through their families for over 18 generations.

Takeru Shiba has just become the leader of the Shiba clan, a family known for commanding the Shinkengers. He calls upon four loyal warriors to help him fight a resurgence of the Gedoushu, an ancient enemy. But as they begin their work, the team suspects Takeru is keeping secrets from them.

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger stands out for a couple of key reasons. It was the first Super Sentai series filmed in high definition (720p). More importantly, it moved away from the usual science fiction focus of the show, instead embracing traditional Japanese mythology and design for its world and characters.

Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (2011)

Led by Captain Marvelous, the Gokaigers are a group of space pirates. But similar to the Straw Hat Pirates from One Piece, they act more like heroes fighting for freedom than traditional plunderers. Still, they come to Earth hoping to find “the greatest treasure in the universe,” primarily motivated by wealth.

As a huge fan of Power Rangers, I was completely hooked by the story! It turns out the big treasure they’re after isn’t just gold, but something way more powerful – the Ranger Keys. These keys hold the energy of 34 different Super Sentai teams, all heroes who bravely fought and fell defending the universe against the evil Zangyack Empire. Now, the son of the former Emperor is building a new army, and it’s up to our band of pirates to learn how to use the powers of these fallen heroes and save everything!

Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger was created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Super Sentai series, but it also became a hit on its own merits. A key reason for its popularity was that it broke from tradition by featuring a team of thieves who ultimately become heroes. This was a fresh approach, as previous Super Sentai shows typically focused on protagonists who were already well-intentioned, if not outright heroic.

Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger (2013)

I’ve always been fascinated by the ancient past, and the story of how the dinosaurs faced an incredible threat is just amazing! Apparently, millions of years ago, Earth was attacked by these terrifying aliens called the Dark Species Deboth. They were so powerful, they almost wiped out the dinosaurs completely! But here’s the incredible part: some dinosaurs didn’t just disappear. They actually transformed into these awesome guardian spirits, the Zyudenryu, and managed to seal the Deboth away in ice, saving the planet! It’s a truly epic tale of courage and transformation.

The Deboth Army is active again and intends to destroy humanity, just as they wiped out the dinosaurs. Fortunately, the Zyudenryu still exist, but they need humans to become their partners and unlock their incredible power. These humans, known as the Kyoryugers – or “the people of the Great and Mighty Lizards” – represent Earth’s final chance for survival.

Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger broke new ground as the first Super Sentai series filmed in full 1080p high definition. It also stood out because its main actors were older than usual for the series – many were in their early 30s. Another unique aspect of Kyoryuger was its team’s color scheme; it was the first Super Sentai team to not include a member wearing yellow.
