Just like the Star Trek TV shows, there are lots of great comic book storylines to explore, so you don’t have to limit yourself to just the most popular ones. We suggest reading as many as you can while you’re enjoying the series – many of the comics closely follow the events on TV or take place between seasons. Here are a few excellent comics to help you get started.

DC Star Trek (1989)

Between 1984 and 1986, DC Comics published Star Trek comics. They created two main series: one focused on The Original Series and another on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Over a total of 136 regular issues, nine annuals, and various special editions, DC provided fans with a significant amount of Star Trek stories.

Vol. 1 begins right after the events of The Wrath of Khan, focusing on how the crew of the Enterprise deals with the loss of Spock and the significant changes happening around them. It’s a tough time for everyone, as Spock’s death leaves a big void. However, Vol. 2, published between 1989 and 1996, is when this series really excels. Consisting of 80 issues, it takes place during the time of The Next Generation and fits perfectly within the show’s established timeline. These comics offer fresh, never-before-seen adventures for Picard, Riker, Data, Worf, and the entire crew of the Enterprise-D.

Star Trek: Mission’s End (2009)

Released in 2009 by IDW, Star Trek: Mission’s End is a five-part comic series that brings the original Enterprise crew’s famous five-year journey to a conclusion. Penned by Ty Templeton and illustrated by Stephen Molnar, it’s intended as a “last adventure” for Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and the entire crew, serving as a bridge to the story told in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The story starts with the Enterprise responding to disturbances on the planet Archenar IV. During the journey, Kirk discovers a hidden and perilous secret connected to an old weapon called the Heart of God – a power that could threaten the entire Federation. Ultimately, Mission’s End marks a poignant farewell to the five-year mission. The film also shows us, in a classically structured way, the events leading up to Kirk’s promotion to Admiral. Furthermore, it explains the reasons behind Spock and McCoy’s departures from Starfleet, something the original series never covered. Overall, Mission’s End delivers the answers fans had been hoping for.

Star Trek: Spock – Reflections (2010)

Regarding Spock, Reflections follows him on a puzzling trip from Romulus into Federation space. During his travels, a fellow traveler repeatedly asks Spock about his destination, purpose, and presence in Romulan territory. Despite the insistent questioning, Spock only offers vague responses. This conversation, though, prompts Spock to consider the events that led him to this moment, specifically his continued attempts to spread the teachings of the Vulcan philosopher Surak to the Romulans. Considering approximately eighty years have passed since Captain Kirk’s death, Spock has a great deal to contemplate.

Although the story is thoughtful and could become overly serious, writers Scott and David Tipton skillfully blend inner reflection with exciting action throughout this four-issue series. Furthermore, the artwork by David Messina is a standout feature. The finishing touches by Federico Manfredi are also worth mentioning.

Star Trek Discovery: Succession (2018)

As a big fan of Star Trek: Discovery, I have to say I really enjoyed this! You can pretty much tell what it’s going to be like just from the title. It directly follows the events of Season 1, and it’s all about Michael Burnham and the crew heading into the Mirror Universe. There’s a lot of political intrigue, especially surrounding who’s going to take the throne and how things eventually unfold to where the series begins. This IDW series is written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson, with art by Tony Shasteen. If you remember 2018’s Star Trek: Discovery – The Light of Kahless, you’ll recognize these names – they were the creative team behind that! It’s definitely worth checking out.

Star Trek: Crew (2009)

Published in 2009 as a prequel to The Original Series, Star Trek: Crew focuses on the story of Number One, one of Star Trek’s most well-known female characters. This five-issue series, created by John Byrne, explores her career *before* she served as Captain Pike’s trusted officer aboard the USS Enterprise, offering fans a look at her beginnings. If you’ve always wanted to know more about Number One, this comic book delivers.

We were deeply saddened by the loss of Majel Barrett Roddenberry, who famously played various characters – including the iconic Number One – and passed away in 2008. This comic served as a tribute to her life and lasting impact on the show. The comic’s art style deliberately evokes the 1960s, enhancing the classic feel of Star Trek: Crew.
