Best of 2024: The Gentlemen on Netflix
As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of crime capers since the golden days of Guy Ritchie, I can confidently say that The Gentlemen is a series worth savoring. Having grown up on the raw energy of films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, it’s refreshing to see a modern take on the genre that doesn’t disappoint.
2024 is fast approaching its final stages, a year marked by significant fluctuations in entertainment across both large and small screens. With the year drawing to a close, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the shows that resonated with me, which you can now enjoy. Today, I’d like to introduce a fresh series directed by Guy Ritchie.
Series: The Gentlemen
Where to Find It: All eight first season episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
Title Explanation: This series hails from writer/director Guy Ritchie, who wrote and directed portions of it. It bears the same name as one of his movies, but it’s a fresh tale with a similar style. However, it returns to his roots and follows the genre of a crime adventure.
The narrative primarily revolves around Eddie (Theo James), who is not only a soldier but also the second-born son of an English nobleman. Upon his father’s demise, Eddie finds himself unexpectedly promoted to the noble position and receives the family estate as inheritance. It transpires that their father viewed Eddie’s older brother, Freddy (Daniel Ings), as too much of a risk and a failure. Consequently, Eddie must now shoulder the responsibility of maintaining the estate and dealing with his kin.
The situation grows complex for Eddie when he discovers that his father had business ties with the Glass family, who were involved in a drug operation. This allowed their operations to take place on a portion of the family’s estate. Bobby Glass, played by Ray Winstone, is orchestrating things from prison, while Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) steps up as the main contact and Eddie’s partner. The question now is: Can Eddie restore order within the family, safeguard the estate, and shield his own kin from potential trouble?
Why it Makes the List
Ritchie is renowned for creating crime tales filled with distinctive characters and narratives, as seen in movies like “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch.” This series fits right in with such storytelling style. What sets it apart is its entertaining characters, witty dialogue, and intriguing plots. To put it simply, the show maintains a steady and enjoyable pace.
The movie “The Gentlemen” was shown earlier in the year, so there’s a chance you might have overlooked it. However, its episodes progress swiftly, making it an excellent choice for a holiday marathon. It kicks off with panache, featuring a particularly thrilling second episode that stands out among my favorites of the year. What truly makes it engaging is the acting.
I’m really enjoying the back-and-forth banter between James and Scodelario on this show. They have a lively chemistry and complement each other wonderfully throughout the series. I appreciate how the story unfolds and the hints it gives for upcoming seasons. This season is entertaining, with some exciting action sequences – what more could you ask for?
