Best of 2024: Disclaimer on Apple TV+

As a connoisseur of storytelling who has traversed through the labyrinthine world of cinema and television for decades, I must say that “Disclaimer” on Apple TV+ is a series that left an indelible impression on me this year. With its intricate narrative, masterful performances, and the deft touch of Alfonso Cuaron, it’s a journey worth taking, even if it’s not for everyone.

2024 is almost at its end, a year marked by significant ups and downs in entertainment across all platforms. As we approach the finish line, I find myself reminiscing about shows I enjoyed that you can now watch. Today, I’d like to highlight an ambitious limited series available on Apple TV+.

Series: Disclaimer

Where to Find It: All seven episodes are now streaming on Apple TV+

Title Synopsis: This television series is a screen adaptation of Renee Knight’s novel. The adaptation was skillfully done by the talented filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, who directed every episode. The story unfolds primarily in England and spans across various periods of time.

Currently, Catherine Ravenscroft, portrayed by Cate Blanchett, is a thriving documentary filmmaker. However, her demeanor can be described as frosty, which tends to push others away, even her husband (Sacha Baron-Cohen) and son (Kodi Smit-McPhee). The question remains, what lies beneath her struggles to forge meaningful connections with people?

While Stephen Brigstocke (played by Kevin Kline) is now retired and living a solitary existence after the death of his son and wife, who passed away following their shared grief. Prior to her demise, his wife penned a book. Upon discovering this manuscript and publishing it, the book sparks a series of events intended to unearth a truth that has been hidden for quite some time.

But is it the truth he expects? Will it bring him peace?

Why It Makes the List

This series by Cuaron with Cate Blanchett wasn’t universally adored. Though it drew anticipation from fans, this was an intriguing production. The mood and delivery might not resonate with all viewers. Furthermore, it’s a mystery that primarily constructs a specific narrative throughout its duration, only to dramatically change directions towards the end.

I found the performances captivating. Initially, I was impressed by Kline’s portrayal and some of the intriguing decisions he made to shape his character. The narrative also kept me engaged as it seemed to be heading in a specific direction, but when the truth was revealed, I found myself deeply immersed in the storyline. To offer a unique perspective, Cuaron employed two distinct cinematographers, which I felt effectively created a distinct visual atmosphere.

Ultimately, this tale has a somber tone which may not appeal to all viewers. Yet, I found the skill in its creation and acting commendable, and I was intrigued by how the twist unexpectedly altered the plot direction. It was a bold move, and I’m satisfied that I saw it through to the end.
