Bandai’s High Grade (HG) Gunpla models are very common and make up a large part of their product range. Today, most HG kits are the more budget-friendly 1/144 scale. Over time, though, the HG line has become a place for any model that doesn’t quite fit into other categories, so it’s always a surprise what Bandai releases as a High Grade. Because of this variety, choosing the best HG Gundam models is difficult, but we’ve compiled a list of some top picks below.
Best HG Gunpla as of 2025
Bandai’s High Grade (HG) Gunpla line includes a huge range of 1/144 scale models, from very affordable kits like the Guntank to much larger and more expensive ones like the Psycho Gundam. Unlike other Gunpla grades, where kits are generally similar in quality and difficulty, HG kits can vary a lot. This has become even more noticeable recently, with some HG kits becoming as detailed and complex – and pricey – as Real Grade models.

Gundam Deathscythe Hell (HGAC)

MSRP: $22
The Gundam Deathscythe Hell, along with its teammates Heavyarms Custom, Sandrock Custom, and Altron, are the first Gunpla kits originally sold exclusively through P-Bandai that are now available in regular retail stores. The Deathscythe Hell earned this wider release because of its awesome appearance, reasonable price, and distinctive design.
The Deathscythe Hell is a solid Gunpla kit, and its distinctive design is a plus. It’s an excellent choice for beginners, offering a good introduction to the hobby without being too difficult. The finished model looks fantastic, and the wings are surprisingly flexible, letting you create lots of different poses. If you’re new to Gunpla, or looking for a great first kit for someone else, this one is well worth considering.
Gundam Calibarn (HGWFM)

MSRP: $27
The Witch From Mercury High Grade model kits are all great, but the Gundam Calibarn is the best. It’s a fun and easy build, and it includes really cool accessories. I especially love that it’s the first Gunpla kit to come with a multi-colored fin.
Like many high-quality model kits, the Calibarn requires some extra work to really make it shine. You’ll need to apply stickers and panel line it, at the very least. Thankfully, it’s relatively easy to build a great-looking model, but it might not be the best choice for a complete beginner.
AMS-123X-X Moon Gundam (HGUC)

MSRP: $40
The Moon Gundam isn’t as well-known as some other models, but Bandai still created a detailed High Grade kit for it. A standout feature is its Psycho Plate, which can be broken down and rebuilt in two different ways. The kit also comes with an Action Base 5 stand, letting you display the Psycho Plate on its own. It’s well-designed with excellent color separation, meaning you don’t need any stickers, and it doesn’t use polycaps, so the joints will stay firm and secure.
The Moon Gundam model isn’t meant to be quickly assembled and displayed. To really make its intricate details stand out, you’ll need to spend time carefully adding panel lining.
RX-78(G)E Gundam EX (HGRFV)

MSRP: $22
The Gundam EX is a fantastic HG model kit that offers a lot for its price. It has impressive detail, rivaling even Real Grade kits, and puts a fresh spin on the iconic RX-78 design. Instead of the traditional red, white, blue, and yellow, it sports a sleek steel gray and striking blood red color scheme. This, combined with its streamlined shape, gives it a look reminiscent of the Terminator.
Building this model is really fun, and the backpack-mounted cannon is a standout feature. It does come with some tricky stickers, though. Luckily, experienced builders can find aftermarket waterslide decals for a cleaner look and easier application.
MS-06-SSP Police Zaku (HGGQ)

MSRP: $24
The GQuuuuuuX HG Police Zaku stands out because it’s a really unique Gunpla design. While you can clearly see the Zaku inspiration, it’s a bold and creative take that fans will definitely want to check out. I especially loved the large fuel tanks and extra thrusters, which give it a more realistic, robotic feel compared to a lot of other models.
The Police Zaku kit uses stickers for its details, which can be frustrating to apply, especially for those new to model building. The arm stripes, in particular, require careful alignment. Despite this, the kit’s unique design, interesting build process, and affordable price make it a great choice for Gunpla enthusiasts.
Psycho Gundam Mk. II (HGUC)

MSRP: $110
Bandai often reuses designs for new model kits, even long after the original molds are retired. That’s why fans were excited to learn the Psycho Gundam Mk. II would be a completely new kit – with the exception of the arms, which were originally made for the Typhoeus Gundam Chimera. The final product is a stunning figure that’s larger than most 1/144 scale models and makes a striking display piece.
The HG Psycho Gundam Mk. II looks fantastic thanks to excellent color separation – very few stickers are needed, only for the eyes and the center of the cannons. It includes a lot of extra parts: 10 bits that can be displayed open or closed, 12 beam effects, and three stands. You can choose to display it with its bits attached or remove its hands, and it can also be fully transformed into mobile armor mode.
