Best Christmas adverts of 2024, including Waitrose, M&S and more
As someone who has grown up with these delightful Christmas advertisements, I must say that this year seems particularly exciting! The young girl’s selfless act of giving resonates deeply with me, reminding us all of the true spirit of Christmas. It’s heartwarming to see companies like Lidl encouraging their customers to give back and help those in need during the holiday season.
After Halloween, the clocks changed back, signaling that Mariah Carey’s holiday tunes are now playing again. This can only mean that Christmas is approaching!
2024’s holiday season appears to be starting earlier than usual, as numerous supermarkets and stores have already revealed their Christmas commercials ahead of time.
This year’s selections feature the comeback of Aldi’s cherished Kevin the Carrot, along with a popular Roald Dahl figure and a heartwarming Amazon commercial. Additionally, Waitrose is keeping us intrigued with a mystery-filled Agatha Christie-style two-parter.
This year’s John Lewis holiday advertisement hasn’t shown up yet, but there are still lots of entertaining things to check out while we wait.
Waitrose Christmas Ad

2024 sees the supermarket going all out with a captivating lineup of British actors for their lighthearted whodunit ad called “A Sweet Mystery”.
At the center of this holiday celebration is none other than Waitrose’s eye-catching Number One Red Velvet Ornament Dessert. This delectable treat (which can be purchased in stores and online starting December 19) has mysteriously vanished, stolen by one of the guests. Actor Matthew MacFadyen is demanding some explanations.
In simpler terms, the actor known for both “Succession” and “Pride and Prejudice” stands out as the likely suspect. Initially concealed among a Mystery Solver’s Guidebook, their true identity is dramatically revealed to viewers only after the crime has taken place.
In a swift move, he dives into the action, arranging an interrogation station where he engages in discussions with Dustin Demri-Burns from ‘Slow Horses’ and Rakhee Thakrar, who hails from ‘Sex Education’. This dynamic duo serves as this year’s Christmas hosts for kids Naya and Sonny.
Among the potential characters are Sian Clifford, known for her role in Fleabag, as Auntie May, Joe Wilkinson from Taskmaster as Uncle Phil, Eryl Maynard as Grandma, and Fig, a newcomer to acting, who also happens to be Pudding the cat.
Waitrose’s Christmas advertisement series consists of two parts. The initial ad leaves viewers curious about the Christmas mystery, and we must wait for the subsequent ad, set to air in the upcoming weeks, to discover the true identity of the holiday mischief-maker.
Caught up in the excitement of gaming, I can’t help but feel a surge of anticipation whenever I think about Waitrose’s Christmas spread. It’s not just food; it’s the taste of joy and tradition that I eagerly look forward to every festive season.
Marks & Spencer Christmas Ad

Marks & Spencer have roped in Dawn French, a beloved figure known for her role in ‘The Vicar of Dibley’, to highlight their top picks for festive food this holiday season.
2021’s advertisement depicts Dawn trudging back home with shopping bags on a chilly winter night, later dropping them on the floor and slumping dejectedly on the couch.
She sighs, clearly overwhelmed by the tasks ahead, as she removes her coat, revealing a charming red plaid pajama set, hinting at her current state of untidiness.
Help arrives miraculously during Christmas, thanks to a decoration that looks like Dawn French and has magical powers, causing Dawn herself some fright. This mystical figure summons a lively group of neighbors to Dawn’s house for a holiday celebration, organizes everything with her enchanted wand, and even provides the necessary items for the party.
In no time at all, a tree adorned with decorations, a lavish M&S feast for parties, and finally, Dawn getting a festive, glittery makeover to host, are all set up. As Elton John’s Step Into Christmas fills the air, Dawn dances enthusiastically, immersing herself in the joy of Christmas.
Asda Christmas Ad

This year, Asda has chosen not to use any big-name celebrities for their ads. Instead, their 2024 Christmas ad titled “Go Big or Go Gnome” focuses on a talented group of ceramic gnomes who are helping the supermarket prepare for the holiday season.
Overlooking an unfolding blizzard, Asda teammates Maggie and Bill fret that decorating the store for the holidays might be beyond their capabilities, considering there are only two of them. Fortunately, Bill has a circle of friends more than willing to lend a hand with the task.
He picks up a gnome and presses its nose – sending a signal to gnomes everywhere to assemble at Asda. Set to the iconic A Team theme, an army of animated gnomes then descend on the store, stocking up mince-pie supplies and showcasing some Christmas sequin partywear before putting up the Christmas tree.
At sunrise, our leader Gnome Max signals, “It’s time for us gnomes!” as they all hop into Asda delivery vans before the store opens. The movie concludes with a playful rendition of Chris Rea’s famous Christmas tune, subtly rewritten to become ‘Driving Home for a Gnomey Christmas’.
Sainsbury’s Christmas Ad

In a heartwarming Christmas advertisement, Sainsbury’s utilizes a well-known and cherished figure to promote their holiday offerings, based on the enchanting story of Roald Dahl’s The BFG.
This year, the kindly large individual seeks assistance from the supermarket regarding his Christmas dinner, and encounters Sophie, a staff member at Sainsbury’s, who has all the necessary items figured out.
They traverse the United Kingdom as a duo, gathering various holiday treats like cheese, sprouts, salmon, and other delectable items produced locally.
Using some enchanting Phizzwhizzard, the BFG miraculously turns the assorted items on the table into a “delectable” Christmas banquet. However, the abundance is more than enough for just one giant to devour.
The advert finishes with him surprising a family with the food before delivering Sophie back to the store.
Aldi Christmas Ad
Hurrah, Kevin the Carrot is back again and here to save another Christmas.
In this occasion, the joyous atmosphere is marred by a batch of malicious candy canes, and it falls upon Kevin – along with his partner Katie – to recover the stolen holiday cheer from the headquarters of these troublesome treats. Expect some festive costumes, overheated challenges, and a trick or trap (to preserve the surprise).
Kevin triumphantly comes back, proving any doubts about his success were unfounded, and the joyous atmosphere is rekindled. Even the most Scrooge-like individuals learn that “Christmas shines brighter when kindness is reciprocated.
Lidl Christmas Ad

This supermarket’s 2024 advert is all about spreading a “Lidl magic” this Christmas.
A youthful girl is gifted a unique collection of golden chimes by a kind elderly woman, following her act of benevolence. However, these chimes aren’t like any others; ring them twice, and they have the power to grant your heartfelt desires.
Following the adorning of our family’s Christmas tree with bells, we all gather at the dining table for a meal, yet scarcely have our plates been filled when an unexpected event occurs.
As a captivated kid, I turned a towering platter of Brussels sprouts into scrumptious Bourbons, to my mother’s dismay, as she swiftly reversed the magic act. A dreamer like me also wished for a mischievous raccoon, who unexpectedly landed in my lap. Last but not least, I found myself amazed by the appearance of a colossal gingerbread man in our very own garden.
The young girl demonstrates kindness by sharing gifts, as she passes on the one she received to a child who might appreciate it more, teaching her loved ones the joy of giving instead of just receiving.
The ad ends by encouraging shoppers to donate toys to Lidl’s charity toy boxes this holiday season, as they did last year from November 1st through December 16th. You can find more information about the initiative on their official website.
Morrisons Christmas Ad

Morrisons’ 2024 advertisement features a medley of “Bad Guys” and “You Give a Little Love” from Bugsy Malone, sung by the group of oven-glove-clad puppets making a comeback.
A Morrisons delivery truck arrives loaded with Christmas supplies, signaling the initiation of festive meal preparations, from marinating the turkey to roasting the salmon. As the music progresses, we’re shown various table settings filled with holiday food favorites, such as appetizing starters, mouthwatering main course options, mince pies, and delightful desserts.
The atmosphere here is somewhat similar to the heartwarming finale of the classic ‘Be Our Guest’ sequence from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, where everyone gathers for a delightful meal together.
Amazon Christmas Ad

The Amazon holiday promotion features a modern rendition of the 1965 hit tune, “What the World Needs Now Is Love.
In the 2024 ad, the setting is an antique theater where the main character, a humble caretaker, serenely croons tunes while performing his cleaning tasks. Meanwhile, his unassuming coworkers are captivated by his exceptional vocal abilities and devise a heartwarming scheme to astonish him.
One day, he steps onto a stage adorned with a microphone and a pre-set backing track. All that’s missing is for him to slip into his newly arrived tuxedo jacket (courtesy of Amazon’s quick delivery service) before he can realize his dream as an entertainer, albeit briefly.

We’re eagerly anticipating it, but there’s still some time left: The ad we’ve been longing for, the one from John Lewis during the 2024 holiday season, hasn’t arrived yet.
The department store has unveiled a sneak peek: the story of a woman’s life, centered around a pink cashmere sweater she received from her mother. This year’s theme, ‘Give knowingly’, is hinted at, but we’ll have to wait and see for more details.
“Gifting is about knowing,” reads the synopsis. “Knowing the people we love, and what they love – even if they don’t know it yet. For over 160 years, we’ve helped our customers find that perfect gift. This Christmas, let us help you find it. This Christmas, Give Knowingly.”
The advertisement featuring Snapper the Venus flytrap plant from last year is expected to be revealed soon, as it was initially released on November 9th. So, we’re likely only a few days away from its debut.
Tesco Christmas Ad
Tesco customers are still waiting to see what their 2024 Christmas advert serves up.
Based on last year’s release date, the advertisement may not be shown until around mid-November, implying that we might have to wait another week or two before it starts airing on screens.
